Overview The Nevada Department of Transportation is recruiting for a Highway Equipment Mechanic II located within the Equipment Division in Las Vegas, NV. Highway Equipment Mechanics keep the sub‑district fleet equipment in safe operating condition through routine maintenance and emergency response, preserving and managing transportation assets. Link to CDL requirements: Key Responsibilities Assist the supervisor with scheduling equipment maintenance and repairs, monitoring progress, maintaining records, and preparing reports. Serve as a lead worker to lower‑level mechanics or supervise remote shop operations; alternatively work as a Class II Emission Inspector performing inspections, certifying emissions‑related repairs, providing technical assistance, and maintaining emission test equipment. Perform routine maintenance, repair, and modification on medium (GVWR 10,500‑26,000 lb.) and heavy (GVWR > 26,000 lb.) highway maintenance and construction equipment, including dump trucks, motor graders, chip spreaders, truck‑mounted backhoes, rotary snow blowers, water trucks, loaders, tractor‑trailer combinations, and pavement grinding machines. Repair and Maintenance Tasks Brake system repairs and rebuilds: brakes, steering components, suspensions, master cylinders, wheel cylinders, brake lines, hoses, air brake systems, power steering pumps, tie‑rod ends, drag links, idler arms, ball joints, springs, pins, bushings, axles, spring shackles, mounts, shocks, and related actuators. Hydraulic system service: leak repair, hose, fitting, and O‑ring seal replacement, hydraulic pump and motor rebuild, hydraulic valve, cylinder, and ram repair, design for additional tasks such as freeway line stripe‑ing and pavement marking. Power distribution system maintenance: gasket, oil seal, fitting, and line replacement; repair of axles, U‑joints, PTO units; removal and rebuild of differentials, transfers, transmissions, clutches; component reassembly and road testing. Electrical system diagnosis and repair: batteries, alternators, starters, ignitions, relays, regulators, switches; design and modification for computer or video equipment used on line stripe‑ing and marking machines. Engine repair and overhaul: diesel and gasoline engines, injector replacement, valve adjustment, filter replacement, pressure checks, external and internal cleaning, valve grinding, cylinder, piston, crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rod repair; reassembly and dynamometer or road testing. Mechanical design and fabrication: creation of battery holders, toolboxes, light mounting brackets, frame modifications, welding, grinding, measuring, and installation of mechanical apparatus. Documentation and safety management: maintain records for vehicle usage, pending repairs, work orders, equipment data files, tool inventory, hazardous materials, material safety data sheets, accident reports, and investigations. Qualifications Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship followed by one year of journey‑level experience with medium and heavy equipment. Completion of the Equipment Mechanic‑in‑Training program in Nevada State service followed by one year of journey‑level experience. One year of experience as a Highway Equipment Mechanic I in Nevada State service. An equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical Knowledge Equipment systems and operating characteristics of light, medium, heavy, and specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment from a variety of manufacturers. Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, assembly, overhaul, repair, and adjustment of automotive and highway construction and maintenance equipment. Working Knowledge Federal and State rules and regulations governing exhaust emission standards. Abilities Diagnose, repair and service devices for the control of exhaust emissions. Calculate time and cost of repairs and prepare repair orders. Set priorities that reflect the relative importance of repair orders. Skills Perform complex diagnoses, repairs, rebuilding, and modifications of maintenance and construction equipment.
