Bus Driver
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years driving experience.
- Possess a valid state issued driver's license.
- Must obtain CDL license with school bus and passenger endorsements.
- Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description.
Bus Driver Desired Background/Skills

- Effective communication skills.
- Writing skills necessary to complete transportation/driver paperwork.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Flexibility to accept scheduling changes as necessary to meet district needs.
- Willingness and ability to receive periodic retraining and updating of driving skills.
- Willingness and ability to drive any school bus as directed by the transportation supervisor in any type of weather.
- Willingness and ability to perform cleaning and upkeep school bus tasks.
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of proper operation of transportation equipment, including special education transportation equipment.
- Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door, and provide necessary assistance in an emergency situation and/or evacuation.
- Knowledge of safety standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation as required in the Washington State Handbook. This includes maintaining necessary certifications and endorsements and keeping them in your possession at all times.
Bus Driver Responsibilities
Each school bus driving driver is responsible to know, understand and follow the transportation office policies and procedures.
Each driver must read, understand and follow:
- The Motor Vehicles Laws of the State of Washington.
- All regulations and Washington State Laws for School Bus Drivers.
- The State of Washington School Bus Driver Handbook.
- The Toledo School District's School Bus Driver Handbook.
- Rules for students riding Toledo School buses.
Each driver will:
- Be able to proficiently operate all sizes and types of school buses in the Toledo School District.
- Operate the school bus in a safe and prudent manner.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, district staff, parents and community members.
Bus Driver Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate assigned school bus in a safe and legal manner consistent with district, state, county and federal regulations.
- Inspect the assigned school bus daily prior to each operation in accordance with state and district regulations and expectations.
- Maintain discipline on the bus consistent with district policies, regulations and procedures.
- Support the learning program and contribute to the growth and development of students through maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships.
- Maintain and submit daily bus logs, and complete all forms and other reports as required.
- Report any mechanical defects and safety hazards immediately.
- Clean interior and exterior of vehicle according to department procedures and perform other such maintenance requirements as department procedure requires.
- Operate and maintain district vehicles and equipment as required; consequently insuring their safe and proper use, protecting the interest of the district regarding pilferage, loss, theft or abuse of all district vehicles, equipment and materials.
- Maintain appropriate physical condition, health status, appearance and attitude necessary to perform duties and responsibilities.
- Obtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Comply with district safety rules and regulations
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
Terms of Employment
- Work year shall be concurrent with the school calendar
- Initial ninety day probationary period according to bargaining unit contract
