Development Writer/Content Creator

Role Description

This role will produce service-driven home services and health content that aligns with USA TODAY’s editorial standards while supporting strategic partnerships and affiliate initiatives. The role's primary focus will be home warranties, flooring, window replacement, mattresses, car warranties, and weight- and hair-loss treatments. The writer may also occasionally contribute to personal finance categories such as investing, insurance, credit cards and retirement planning.

Working closely with editors on the Content Monetization team, this writer will create clear, trustworthy and engaging content designed to help readers make informed decisions about home service products. Assignments may include:

• Explainers
• Provider comparisons
• Product and service reviews
• Other consumer-focused guides that follow USA TODAY’s commerce and editorial standards

This role requires strong research skills, the ability to translate industry jargon into accessible language, and experience writing optimized digital content that performs well in search while maintaining editorial credibility. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska, Hawaii and Wyoming.

Responsibilities:

• Write clear, accurate and reader-focused home services content across a variety of formats, including guides, comparisons and reviews.
• Conduct research using credible sources, data and expert insights to ensure accuracy and authority.
• Follow USA TODAY editorial guidelines, commerce standards and disclosure requirements.
• Collaborate with editors to revise and optimize content for clarity, accuracy and search performance.
• Update existing content as needed to maintain accuracy and relevance.
• Meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced digital newsroom environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience writing about home services, personal finance, or small-business topics.
• Ability to explain complex concepts in a clear, approachable way.
• Familiarity with SEO-driven service journalism and digital publishing best practices.
• Familiarity with the latest developments in Generative Engine Optimization.
• Strong research and fact-checking skills.
• Experience working in a newsroom, digital media organization or commerce content environment.

Salary Information

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $50,500 and $78,906. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
