Journeyman Plumber
Job Description
This role performs journey-level plumbing work to install, maintain, and repair plumbing, hydronic heating, and utility distribution systems across a large university campus. You will ensure that academic buildings, high-density housing, athletic facilities, and specialized research laboratories operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with codes and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Install, connect, and test plumbing fixtures including urinals, water closets, wash basins, sinks, drinking fountains, compressed air fixtures, and gas-fired equipment such as heat furnaces, boilers, and processing tanks.
- Monitor and troubleshoot major plumbing breakdowns by diagnosing issues and performing repairs or replacements on clogged main sewer lines, main gas line failures, steam equipment and devices, and fire sprinkler systems.
- Determine routing of pipe and location of plumbing fixtures, accessories, and equipment such as inlets, vent pipes, valves, meters, gauges, hangers, brackets, and water, sewer, gas, and air connections by following trade practice specifications, blueprints, sketches, and applicable codes.
- Mark lines and points on walls, floors, ceilings, and open areas or set stakes to locate pipe routes, inlets, outlets, connections, fixtures, and equipment; prepare working sketches as needed to support installations and modifications.
- Check, service, clean, and connect oxygen, nitrous oxide, and suction regulators in applicable facilities, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, and sewer cleaning equipment to support installation, excavation, and system maintenance activities.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair domestic water supply, drainage, venting, and sewage systems, including the repair or replacement of water heaters, commercial flushometers, backflow preventers, and campus fire hydrants.
- Maintain specialized campus systems such as medium and low-pressure steam distribution lines, condensate traps, and hydronic heating and chilled water systems to support building comfort and reliability.
- Service water treatment systems critical to research laboratories, including reverse osmosis (RO) systems, water softeners, and distillers, ensuring consistent water quality for specialized applications.
- Respond to emergencies and clear complex blockages in sanitary, storm, and grease drain lines using high-velocity water jetters, commercial augers, and diagnostic drain cameras.
- Install plumbing lines, gas piping, and laboratory-specific fixtures such as emergency eyewash stations, autoclaves, and chemical waste drains to support facility upgrades and laboratory remodels.
- Ensure all work complies with state and local plumbing codes, OSHA regulations, and institutional safety guidelines, including adherence to lockout/tagout protocols and other safety procedures.
- Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing, hydronic heating, and utility distribution systems to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Collaborate with other trades and facility staff to plan, schedule, and coordinate work, minimizing disruption to academic and research activities.
- Perform related or similar duties as required or assigned to support the overall operation and maintenance of campus facilities.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 4 years of plumbing experience or completion of a recognized plumbing apprenticeship program.
- Proven experience installing and repairing plumbing systems, including water, sewer, steam, and gas systems.
- Ability to install, connect, and test a wide range of plumbing fixtures and gas-fired equipment.
- Strong skills in pipe installation, pipe fitting, and pipe repair across various materials such as PVC and other piping systems.
- Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, sketches, trade practice specifications, and applicable plumbing codes.
- Proficiency with hand tools and mechanical tools commonly used in plumbing and construction.
- Experience with installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of site-wide plumbing, hydronic heating, and utility distribution systems.
- Capability to diagnose and repair domestic water supply, drainage, venting, and sewage systems, including water heaters, flushometers, backflow preventers, and fire hydrants.

- Knowledge of and adherence to state and local plumbing codes, OSHA standards, and institutional safety guidelines, including lockout/tagout procedures.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment or piping weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Comfort working in confined spaces, utility tunnels, and steam manholes, and performing tasks that require crawling or kneeling for extended periods.
- Willingness and ability to work around hazardous elements and extreme temperatures while using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Background in construction-related plumbing, including renovation, retrofits, and new installations.
- Familiarity with compressed air fixtures and medical gas-related components such as oxygen, nitrous oxide, and suction regulators.
