Licensed Art Therapist

Overview SUMMARY: The Art Therapist/Expressive Arts Therapist reports to the Clinical Director/Unit Chief and the Clinical Director of Social Work and Counseling regarding professional standards, regulatory and licensing requirements, credentials/privileges and continuing education. The Art Therapist/Expressive Arts Therapist provides treatment to a wide range of patients applying art therapy skills and interventions to assist patients in the resolution of personal and environmental problems attributed to mental or physical illness with the goal of restoring patients to their highest level of functioning. The organization also outlines core Success Factors guiding teamwork and outcomes. Responsibilities Evaluates patients, establishes treatment goals/outcomes, and implements patient care plans. Observes precautions, indications, and contraindications for all treatment procedures. Monitors patient progress, re-establishes goals, and revises treatment plans according to Rehabilitation Department protocol. Provides written and verbal communication with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team regarding patient rehabilitation status and recommendations. Utilizes LifeChart to document significant clinical findings in the patient’s medical record, in accordance with department and hospital policy. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Applies art psychotherapy techniques, including art therapy assessment tools, CBT techniques, and trauma-informed art therapy to meet patient goals and objectives. Provides a safe learning environment while adhering to department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and infection control. Provides Art Therapy supervision to undergraduate and graduate students and communicates with Senior Art Therapist/LMHC II to monitor student progress and compliance with individualized curriculums and clinical requirements. Demonstrates competency in therapeutic process as determined by the clinical specialist, supervisor, or manager. Participates in mandatory departmental and hospital-wide in-services and obtains CEUs through external conferences to meet standards of the AATA and NBCC credentialing boards. Provides education and training to patients, caregivers, and families to maintain progress achieved in therapy; educates other health care professionals about the role of art therapy/mental health counseling and provides training and in-services in areas of expertise. Reviews and reassesses program materials, practices, activities, and clinical requirements, recommending modifications to Senior Art Therapist/LMHC II or Rehabilitation Clinical Supervisor; maintains and orders program materials and supplies. Oversees hospital art gallery selections for display in approved spaces on a monthly basis. Develops relationships and coordinates services with community organizations for the Healing Arts Program. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy from a graduate school accredited by the American Art Therapy Association. Registered Art Therapist (ATR) or Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT) and current license from the State of Rhode Island (LMHC, LMHC-A). Experience Two years of relevant experience, preferably in an inpatient psychiatric hospital setting with children and/or adolescents. Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methodologies of art therapy/expressive art therapy. Working knowledge of psychosocial functioning of patients and application of expressive activities within a psychiatric setting. Ability to work with a wide array of visual arts/expressive arts mediums. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care considering aging processes, human development, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Work is performed in a hospital setting with significant exposure to patient care. Independent Action Performs independently within program policies and practices and refers complex problems to the director for clarification of policies and procedures.
