Job Summary Under general direction of the Chief Veterinarian, responsible for performing veterinarian services in the City’s Animal Care Services Department. Duties include examinations of animals brought into the facility; administering vaccinations and preventive medicine; performing spay and neuter surgeries; and carrying out medically necessary surgeries. Evaluates animals for treatment or medically required euthanasia to prevent suffering. Consults and works with staff, contracted, specialty, spay & neuter, and emergency veterinarians as part of a team responsible for animal care. Exercises technical supervision over assigned staff. Incentive Package Schedule provides a $30,000 incentive: $15,000 upfront and $7,500 on the first and second anniversary dates. Work Location Animal Care Services – 4710 Highway 151, San Antonio, TX 78227. Work Hours Five 8-hour shifts per week, 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., with two days off. Availability required on weekends and holidays as needed. Essential Job Functions Determine disease or injury at intake through examination of companion animals, exotic animals, pocket pets, and livestock. Triage, stabilize, and medically manage animals in critical condition. Restore animal health via medical and surgical treatment. Lift and carry animals up to 50 pounds and assist team lifts for heavier animals. Ensure all animals receive appropriate vaccinations and parasite preventatives. Certify animals in rabies quarantine and forward specimens for testing if deceased. Medically evaluate impounded animals for adoption or euthanasia. Oversee vaccinations, parasite control, and basic diagnostics. Perform high- quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries. Prepare and conduct in-service training for staff. Document disease cases per Texas Animal Health Commission and other regulatory requirements. Advise medical foster parents on nutrition, healthcare, and welfare. Respond to resident inquiries on medical services and public health issues. Conduct intake exams and necropsies for cruelty cases when required. Promote animal health by advising staff on sanitation, feeding, and husbandry. Testify in court on animal-related cases when necessary. Act as Chief Veterinarian in their absence. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Job Requirements Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited college or university. Licensure in good standing to practice veterinary medicine in Texas. Valid DEA Registration Certificate in good standing. 4th-year veterinary students at U.S. accredited programs may apply; must obtain Texas licensure and DEA registration before starting. Veterinarians from other states with a DVM and current DEA certificate may apply; must obtain Texas licensure before starting. Preferred Qualifications Experience practicing as a veterinarian. Experience performing high- quality, high- volume spay/neuter surgeries. Two years of experience with companion animals in a clinical, general practice, emergency clinic, or animal shelter. Applicant Information Abbreviated substitution: Applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education, or one year of higher education for two years of experience, to meet minimum requirements. Full academic and credential documentation must be provided upon selection. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Veterinary medical procedures, techniques, and practices. State, federal, and local animal control laws. Current shelter medicine practices. Public health and rabies education procedures. Basic supervisory practices. Animal immunology and handling safety procedures. Surgical procedures and techniques. Spay/neuter surgery proficiency. Ability to work under stress. Clear and effective communication. Establish and maintain working relationships with staff and the public. Veterinary examinations and euthanasia determination. Perform essential job functions with or without accommodations. Work in clinic and kennel environments with possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.
