Job Description:

The position is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and entering accurate diagnoses and procedural codes for operative procedures and inpatient consulting services performed by the Department of Neurological Surgery faculty at both Gainesville and Halifax.

Key Responsibilities

• Review operative reports, progress notes, and other clinical documentation to identify billable services and determine the appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes.
• Verify physician attestation statements and ensure required documentation is complete and supports coding and billing requirements.
• Enter and maintain accurate charges for surgical procedures and non-surgical inpatient services in Epic.
• Perform comprehensive chart reviews to ensure all appropriate services are captured and coding and regulatory requirements are met.
• Monitor and resolve TES edits in Epic, addressing discrepancies and ensuring charges are accurately processed.
• Verify patient demographics, insurance coverage, and billing information and resolve discrepancies as needed.
• Establish and maintain guarantor and insurance information in Epic, including subscriber relationships, policy information, claim addresses, authorizations, dates of injury, and other required claim details.
• Verify insurance eligibility through electronic resources and direct communication with insurance providers.
• Review patient and encounter information to determine appropriate classifications, including emergency admissions, hospital-to-hospital transfers, and endovascular cases, for departmental reporting and statistical purposes.
• Maintain accurate databases containing surgical charges, diagnosis codes, CPT codes, dates of service, and attending physician information.
• Monitor operative documentation and follow up on unsigned or missing operative reports to support timely and accurate billing.
• Ensure appropriate documentation of teaching provider involvement for services involving residents and fellows.
• Work collaboratively with the Associate Director and departmental leadership to evaluate surgical charges, coding practices, and insurance reimbursement opportunities.
• Research complex or evolving coding questions using professional coding organizations, federal and private payer guidelines, coding networks, and other authoritative resources.
• Serve as a resource to attending surgeons, fellows, residents, and staff by providing coding education, guidance, and support.
• Keep faculty and trainees informed of coding, documentation, billing, and regulatory changes that may affect reimbursement.
• Participate in monthly Coder Forum meetings to discuss Epic product-line performance, coding trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
• Collaborate with departmental leadership to develop and implement processes that improve coding accuracy, compliance, documentation, and reimbursement.
• Conduct independent research and prepare reports and analyses related to coding practices, reimbursement, and departmental performance.
• Participate in professional development opportunities, including coding seminars, classes, meetings, and continuing education, to maintain current knowledge and skills.

Expected Salary:

$24.50-$27.50 per hour

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of professional medical coding experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Certified Professional Coder (CPC)/ American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS-P) required.

Preferred:

Knowledge of medical terminology, surgical coding Certification as a coder, either CPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) or CCS-P (American Health Information Management Association).

Knowledge of business and office practice; Knowledge of Excel, and other applicable software.

Ability to analyze financial data and able to generate understandable reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
