About the Position

Job Title: Neurodiagnostic Technician Profession: Tech Specialty: Neurodiagnostic/EEG Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: One (1) year of experience in a hospital setting is required. License: Required - BLS. Preferred - R.EEG.T. Certifications: Required - BLS. Preferred - R.EEG.T. Must-Have: Knowledge in neurodiagnostic practice and procedures. Description: The Neurodiagnostic Technician applies knowledge to produce high-quality neurodiagnostic studies. The technician meets or exceeds department guidelines and applicable standards. A thorough knowledge and proficiency in the skill of neurodiagnostic practice and procedures is essential. Core EEG functions include, but are not limited to, routine outpatient and inpatient EEGs. Prolonged routine EEGs are performed to rule out ECS (brain death). Long-term continuous EEG monitoring is conducted in patients. Outpatient event monitoring is part of the responsibilities. Private VEEGs are performed using the 10-20 system for electrode placement. Adaptations are made for individual patients as indicated within the 10-19 system. Advanced EEG functions include inpatient event monitoring of VEEGs. Monitoring multiple patients' EEG and video in the EMU is a key responsibility. Appropriate notations on the EEG record must be made. The technician actively evaluates patients during clinical events. Notifications to physicians and/or nurses are made as necessary. Monitoring patients scheduled for ictal SPECT includes observing VEEG to detect seizure onset. Assistance is provided to relevant staff regarding appropriate clinical scenarios. EEGs are performed in the Interventional Radiology lab during WADA procedures. The technician also conducts intracranial EEG recording and intra-operative EEG brain mapping. Quality and safety assurance includes monitoring to prevent injury related to clinical events or falls. Understanding mechanisms for notifying appropriate personnel is crucial. Maintenance of electrical safety during all neurodiagnostic testing is required. Compliance with minimum standards and infection control standards is expected. An understanding of potential risks such as poor electrode connections and electrical interference is important. The technician applies knowledge to provide patient education relating to neurodiagnostic procedures. On-the-job training for specific skills is provided as appropriate. Continuous improvement of competency and acquisition of new skills through formal education is pursued. Non-EEG functions such as evoked potentials and SSEP are also included in the role.
