Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Level 1 trauma experience Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers) Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit Description: The position involves working with a patient population that includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience conditions, as well as some medical overflow. Nurse/patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during nights. RNs are expected to titrate drips, including heparin based on PTT, and must have heparin gtt experience. A charge nurse is available 24/7 and does not typically take an assignment unless staffing ratios are exceeded. House supervisors are also present 24/7. Nurse aides and patient care techs are available, with day ratios of 1:9-10, evening ratios of 1:9-10, and night ratios of 1:10-12. RNs may troubleshoot high flow oxygen equipment, but rare COVID cases are managed at this unit. Telemetry monitoring is house-wide with Phillips monitors, and nurses are not required to read their own strips. The schedule consists of 12-hour shifts, with weekend requirements every other weekend and holiday requirements every other holiday. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating is expected in rotation with the rest of the staff. Travelers may float to a general unit floor and will take the full team; if floated outside of a general unit, skills must match those required for the new unit. There is no specific dress code, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are allowed. Unit-specific orientation includes two days of training with an educator and preceptor while caring for patients.
