Overview Position Overview The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch seeks board-certified physician at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level to join a growing Division of Hematology/Oncology serving Southeast Texas through UTMB's multi-campus health system. Faculty members will provide comprehensive adult hematology and oncology care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including participating in multidisciplinary tumor boards, and support infusion and inpatient oncology services. Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows, participation in clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives, and development of scholarly activities aligned with personal interests and the division’s strategic priorities. Division Strengths and Resources The Division of Hematology & Oncology at UTMB provides comprehensive hematology and oncology services across UTMB’s multi-campus system, including outpatient clinics, infusion centers, and inpatient oncology units. Division programs include: Outpatient Hematology & Oncology Clinics (solid tumor and malignant hematology). Infusion/Chemotherapy and Biologic Therapy Services. Inpatient Oncology Consult Service and Oncology Hospitalist Coverage. Blood Disorders Clinic (benign hematology, anticoagulation management, platelet/bleeding disorders). Survivorship and Late Effects Clinic. Palliative Care and Symptom Management Collaboration. Primary Responsibilities Faculty responsibilities are tailored to individual expertise and appointment track, with flexibility to emphasize clinical, educational, or research missions. All faculty maintain clinical practice and contribute to educational activities commensurate with their appointment. Clinical Responsibilities Provide outpatient and/or inpatient hematology and oncology care, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and longitudinal management of patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and benign blood disorders. Administer and supervise systemic therapies (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy), oversee infusion services, and manage treatment-related toxicities and complications. Participate in inpatient consult services, rounds, and multidisciplinary care coordination for hospitalized oncology patients. Lead or participate in tumor boards, multidisciplinary clinics, and care conferences to coordinate individualized treatment plans. Provide survivorship care, symptom management, and goals-of-care discussions, working closely with palliative care and supportive services. Engage in clinical quality improvement initiatives (safety in chemotherapy administration, infection prevention, guideline adherence). Supervise and collaborate with advanced practice providers, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and case management. General Responsibilities Participate in call coverage and on call rotations as assigned. Document clinical encounters thoroughly and ensure compliance with coding/billing and regulatory standards for clinical trials and chemotherapy administration. Maintain up to date knowledge of oncology and hematology guidelines and best practices. Engage in departmental, institutional, and community outreach activities to advance cancer care access and equity. Educational Responsibilities Supervise and teach Hematology/Oncology fellows, Internal Medicine residents, and medical students in clinic, infusion center, and inpatient settings. Deliver didactic lectures, clinical case conferences, and bedside teaching on oncology and hematology topics, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice. Mentor trainees in research projects, career development, and fellowship/career selection. Contribute to fellowship curriculum development, competency assessment, and program evaluation. Provide interprofessional education to nursing, pharmacy, and allied health trainees involved in oncology care. Research and Scholarly Responsibilities (as aligned with track). Participate in clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, and collaborative research initiatives; assist with patient accrual and study oversight as appropriate. Develop scholarly projects in clinical, translational, health services, or educational research consistent with interests and division priorities. Seek extramural funding and contribute to publications, quality metrics, and presentations. Candidate Profile Required Qualifications MD or DO degree from an accredited institution. Board certification or board eligibility in Hematology and Oncology (or equivalent) and in Internal Medicine as appropriate. Completion of ACGME accredited residency and fellowship training in Hematology/Oncology. Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Texas. Demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, education, and scholarly activity. Preferred Qualifications Experience in clinical trials and research coordination or a record of scholarly productivity. Expertise in subspecialty areas (e.g., cellular therapies, specific tumor types, benign hematology) desirable. Interest in mentorship, curriculum development, and quality improvement initiatives. Compensation and Support Compensation follows the Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Compensation Plan and is benchmarked to AAMC Faculty Salary Survey data aligned by academic rank and geographic region. Total compensation includes base salary with potential for clinical productivity incentives (for outpatient-based faculty), academic achievement bonuses, or research support depending on appointment track.
