USD #235 Uniontown High School - Instructional Paraeducator SEK Interlocal #637 SPED USD235-Uniontown High School, Uniontown, KS - Uniontown, Kansas Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Instructional Paraeducator Purpose: The job of the Instructional Paraeducator is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in regular education classrooms, interrelated resource rooms, or other special needs settings; assist in implementing instruction plans; monitor student behavior; and provide information to appropriate school personnel, all under the direct supervision of the Special Education Teacher. This position may work with students in Early Childhood settings, Elementary or Secondary classrooms, resource rooms, or with speech and school psych providers. The role may also work with students with mild to moderate disabilities, including deaf/hard of hearing, visual impairments, and other disabilities, to be served in the general education setting. Responsible to: Special Education Teacher, District Administration; SEK 637 Administration Experience: Job related experience is desired. Education/Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must have 48 college hours or a qualifying score on the Master Teacher Online Exam within the first 90 days of employment, and 20 hours per year of in‑service training are required. All para educator positions are considered non‑exempt, at‑will positions. Clearances (Required upon offer of acceptance of employment): Criminal background check Health and inoculation certificate on file in Central Office FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Wages: Based on hourly rate, number of days worked, and completion of required trainings (9‑month school calendar) Essential Functions Adapts and provides accommodations of classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to give special education students an opportunity to actively participate in general education and/or resource room activities. Aids students in and out of the classroom (e.g., packing backpacks, note‑taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills) to meet their needs and support social growth. Assists students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to medical conditions and/or physical limitations (e.g., diaper changing, potty training, lavatory, hand washing, nutrition) so they can function and maintain participation in the general education environment. Participates in trainings (e.g., educational strategies, disability education) to acquire and convey information relative to the job functions and meet annual state requirements. Collaborates with staff to provide support and information related to student progress as established in the Individual Education Plan under the direction of certified staff. Creates visual aids based on the level of a student’s visual impairment to improve learning. Implements educational and behavioral programming under teacher supervision to develop new skills. Assists students with challenging or aggressive behaviors in accordance with policies and the IEP. Instructs students in activities in individual and group settings (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to meet IEP goals under certified staff direction. Maintains instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability and reliable progress information. Monitors students during periods across various school and community environments to provide a safe, positive learning environment. Establishes a positive learning environment and responds to individual student needs. Works cooperatively and demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups. Safeguards confidential information and observes confidentiality requirements. Uses appropriate behavior‑management techniques to maintain a positive climate. Provides faithful, daily attendance and adheres to work schedules. Observes all district and interlocal policies during activities. Restricts cell phone use to break and lunch times. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the educational team. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills: Adhere to safety practices, operate standard office equipment and software, prepare and maintain accurate records, and use district‑approved crisis intervention techniques. Knowledge: Basic math, reading and following instructions, understanding complex multi‑step written and oral instructions, instructional procedures, age‑appropriate student activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, stages of child development/behavior, safe handling of blood‑borne pathogens and crisis de‑escalation techniques. Abilities: Schedule activities, collect data, use basic job‑related equipment, work with diverse individuals, problem‑solve, communicate and collaborate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, set priorities, work on a team, handle interruptions, accept constructive feedback. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions The job requires walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. It may require travel, indoor/outdoor work year‑round, and ability to work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments.
