Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and update patient information.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients in a clear, courteous manner.
- Demonstrate proficiency in specimen collection techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Fully understand all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport.
- Store specimen samples according to required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocol procedures required to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
