FINANCE DIRECTOR
Supervised by: Executive Director
Supervises: Accountant, Payroll Administrator, Grant Assistant, and other finance staff as assigned
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Finance is responsible for the overall financial management of Community Action Alger Marquette (CAAM). This position provides leadership and oversight for accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, grant compliance, audits, investments, risk management, and internal controls. The Director of Finance works collaboratively with program leadership, the Executive Director, Finance Committee, Board of Directors, auditors, and funding agencies to ensure the financial integrity and sustainability of the organization.
Essential Job Functions:
Financial Management
- Direct and oversee all accounting and financial operations of the Agency.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and provide recommendations to management.
- Develop financial forecasts and cash flow projections.
- Manage banking relationships, investments, and organizational reserves.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment and reconciliation of all financial transactions.
Budgeting and Planning
- Coordinate development of the Agency's annual operating budget.
- Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis.
- Assist program directors in developing program budgets and financial projections.
- Support strategic planning through financial analysis and forecasting.
Grant and Contract Administration
- Oversee financial administration of federal, state, local, and private grants.
- Ensure compliance with funding source regulations and reporting requirements.
- Monitor grant expenditures and budget compliance.
- Prepare and submit required financial reports to funding agencies.
- Maintain indirect cost rate documentation and cost allocation methodologies.
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management
- Coordinate annual independent audits and Single Audits.
- Serve as primary liaison with auditors, monitoring agencies, and regulatory entities.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal regulations, and Agency policies.
- Maintain internal controls to safeguard Agency assets.
- Oversee organizational insurance coverage and risk management activities.
- Ensure timely completion of IRS Form 990, retirement plan Form 5500, and other required filings.
Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise finance department staff and provide leadership, coaching, and performance management.
- Establish departmental goals, priorities, and work plans.
- Promote professional development and continuous improvement.
- Foster collaboration between finance staff and program leadership.
Board and Committee Support
- Prepare financial reports and presentations for the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.
- Attend Finance Committee and Board meetings as requested.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support organizational decision-making.
Other Duties
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information.
- Participate in agency meetings, training courses, and professional development activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting or financial management experience.
- Experience managing organizational budgets, financial reporting, and accounting systems.
- Experience supervising staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
- Experience in nonprofit financial management.
- Experience managing federal and state grants.
- Experience with Single Audits and federal grant compliance requirements.
- Experience with multi-program, multi-funding source organizations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial management practices, and internal controls.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and grant management requirements.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local funding regulations.
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and prepare detailed financial reports.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and other business applications.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, funders, auditors, and community partners.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
