Assistant United States Attorney—Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) Open continuous announcement. Overview The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia serves as both the local and federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Division prosecute civil matters, including investigations under the False Claims Act, administrative civil penalties, and other affirmative civil litigation on behalf of the United States. This role focuses on affirmative civil enforcement (ACE) within the Civil Division, collaborating closely with DOJ divisions, federal law‑enforcement agencies, and occasionally with criminal AUSAs and state prosecutors. Responsibilities Independently oversee investigations, including preparing subpoenas and interviewing witnesses. Marshal evidence, coordinate with law enforcement, negotiate settlements, and conduct legal research. Draft legal memoranda, prepare and respond to written discovery, and take and defend depositions or examinations. Represent the United States at trial and on appeal. Assist with civil cases defending the United States, gaining trial and appellate experience, including oral argument at the D.C. Circuit. Coordinate with whistleblowers in qui tam actions from inception through trial. Progress in responsibilities as training and experience grow. Qualifications Required Qualifications J.D. degree (or equivalent) and an active bar admission in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction. At least three years of post‑J.D. legal or related experience. U.S. citizenship. Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility, depending on assignment. Preferred Qualifications Significant litigation experience and superior oral communication skills. Demonstrated capacity for independently managing multiple investigations or litigations concurrently. Conditions of Employment United States citizen or national. Initial appointment contingent on satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax, and drug testing); continued employment contingent on favorable background investigation. Registration for Selective Service, if applicable. Must reside in the District of Columbia or within 25 miles thereof, per 28 U.S.C. § 545. J.D. degree and active bar membership required. Ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance with SCI access, as assigned. Salary and Benefits Pay range: $70,442 to $171,487 (or $94,350 to $197,100 including locality pay). The range is based on years of professional attorney experience. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Travel Occasional travel.
