Responsibilities Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team. Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive Assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure Preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for the procedures Performing accounting procedures in concert with the RN circulator Assisting with placement of sterile drapes Providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure Maintaining an organized sterile field Ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontamination areas. Assist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparation of room for subsequent patients. Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities. Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring. Able to perform all duties of the Certified Surgical Technologist and able to effectively plan for, anticipate, and respond to the changing needs of the surgical team. Consistently uses preference cards as a basis for case preparation Displays dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and knowledge of the step-by-step procedure for specific surgical procedures. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care, and safe use of positioning equipment, especially: Amsco-Steris OR Tables Orthopedic Fracture Table Total Knee Positioner Hand-Arm Table Cystoscopy table accessories for Amsco-Steris OR Tables Monitors patient to identify deviations from expected responses requiring immediate action Participates in TJC recommended and approved “Time Out” procedures to insure that the patient, surgeon, anesthesia, circulator, and the booked case all agree before the patient undergoes anesthesia. Appropriately prepares and handles all specimens for laboratory analysis. Adapts the preparation of the procedure to meet the needs for treatment of individual pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Follows Policies and Procedures and AORN guidelines in accounting for all sponges, needles, and instruments during and after the procedure and documents in appropriate area. Takes initiative for professional development and keeps current with the evolution of surgical practice and procedures. Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient’s growth and development in order to identify each patients needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, where appropriate. Pediatric Adolescence Adult Geriatric Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies. Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs. Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards. Attendance is an essential function of this position. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Requirements Diploma/Certificate or Associate Degree in surgical technology Good organizational skills Physical stamina Ability to remain calm in emergency situations Able to function in a physically demanding, high-stress environment Work irregular hours including call hours CST experience in a hospital setting Preferred Effectively functions as a preceptor for peers and new employees Self motivated and directed Certifications and Licenses Requirements Required Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Current BLS Certification *BLS certification is required upon hire. ACLS & PALS certifications are required to be achieved as soon as possible but not later than six (6) months after hire date. All certifications required in this job description must be maintained by the employee throughout their employment.
