Mechanic Master (JobID: 15007) Position Type: Transportation/ Mechanic, Master Date Posted: 5/18/2026 Location: Support Services Center (Thornton, CO) Closing Date: 06/20/2026 GRADE: G24 (Hourly Range/Step 1 - Step 8: $29.84 - $36.79) MINIMUM HOURLY RATE: $29.84 STANDARD HOURS PER WEEK: 40 FTE: 1.0 MONTHS PER YEAR: 12 JOB CODE: 1455 POSITION TYPE: REPLACEMENT – PERMANENT/REGULAR Summary Responsible for inspection, repair and maintenance of all district fleet vehicles, including light/medium/heavy duty diesel, gas, propane, and alternative powered school buses, warehouse trucks, support fleet vehicles, snow removal equipment and trailers. All inspections and repairs conform to Colorado Department of Education, Department of Transportation, OEM and District requirements, following all regulations and guidelines per FMVSS and FMCSR to ensure quality control and preventive maintenance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform preventative maintenance and inspections of all fleet vehicles as required by CDE, DOT, FMVSS and FMCSR, and report progress to supervisor. Diagnose and repair all types of vehicles and equipment, including diesel, gasoline, propane engines, engines emissions, drive‑train systems, chassis, suspension, steering, heating & cooling, brakes, wheelchair lifts, electrical systems, GPS, camera systems, etc. Instruct, train and assist drivers on proper functions of school buses and fleet vehicles; communicate via two‑way radio; act as a technical resource for new apprentice mechanics, fleet mechanics and drivers. Conduct advanced diagnoses of electrical and mechanical faults (engines, transmissions, drivetrain, ABS/traction, collision mitigation, electrical systems, wiring circuits) using diagnostic equipment (DVOM multimeter, PC software, laptops, scanners). Complete required forms, paperwork and data entry for fleet maintenance records (repair orders, inspection forms, diesel emission forms, etc.), enter work orders and report time in fleet management software. Respond to roadside service calls; diagnose, repair, and report vehicle breakdowns to supervisor. Fabricate, modify and repair vehicle body and structural components via welding, metal working; make minor body repairs. Train, mentor and instruct apprentice and fleet mechanics on maintenance and repair procedures. Pursue ongoing professional development and training to stay current with industry changes and new technology. Provide snow removal support: plow snow in the transportation lot and prepare vehicles for operations. Perform other duties as assigned, including contingency plans. Education and Related Work Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum five (5) years of experience in vehicle maintenance repairs, including medium/heavy duty diesel engines. Diesel or Automotive vocational or college certification preferred. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Criminal background check required for hire. Valid Colorado driver’s license. Motor Vehicle Record at time of application. Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with P2 endorsement required within six months of hire. DOT Physical examination required for hire. Must be insurable through the District’s Self Insurance Pool. Ase School Bus Master or Medium-Heavy Truck Master certification, or Automobile & Light Truck Master with two additional ASE certifications within six months. Maintain valid Master ASE certifications throughout employment. CDE Inspector qualification (including air brake) required within one year of hire. Colorado Diesel Opacity license required within one year. DOT inspector qualifications required. Forklift operator certificate required within one year. Salary Information All classified positions are paid hourly, starting on Step 1 of the grade schedule. Employees may advance up to Step 8 based on experience.
