USGS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) located in Vancouver, Washington. The USGS mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable intelligence at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers. As the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, USGS collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides science about natural resource conditions, issues, and problems. Research Project: The USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) is responsible for monitoring unrest and providing timely warnings of impending hazardous activity at more than a dozen volcanoes in the Cascade Range and elsewhere in the western United States. A major component of the Observatory’s monitoring program is geodetic surveying to detect ground deformation, which commonly precedes and accompanies volcanic eruptions. Each summer, members of the CVO staff conduct Global Positioning System (GPS) and gravity surveys and install continuous deformation monitoring stations at Cascade volcanoes in Washington, Oregon, or northern California, and at the Yellowstone caldera, Wyoming. In addition, these and other volcanic areas are examined using a remote sensing technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). The goal of the research is to identify and characterize ground deformation to better understand the physical processes causing volcanic unrest, thus improving volcano hazards assessments. Tentative plans for summer 2026 include summertime GPS installations at the Yellowstone caldera and at the Three Sisters volcanic center, Oregon; campaign GPS surveys at Mt. Adams, Long Valley Caldera and Mt. Rainier; and installation/maintenance of monitoring stations at Mount St. Helens (WA), Mount Rainier (WA), Mount Hood (OR), and Newberry (OR). This survey is intended to identify and monitor ground deformation and gravity change that have been identified previously or to measure background deformation rates. Routine InSAR observations of these and other volcanoes will continue and focused studies will be undertaken if unrest is detected. Learning Objectives: You will learn GPS surveying to collect, process, and interpret GPS and gravity data, and to build and deploy volcano monitoring equipment. Depending on the intern’s computer skills, some processing and analysis of InSAR data may be attempted. These methods are highly technical and at the forefront of current geodetic research. Familiarity with them will give the participant a valuable set of skills that could be applied to a career in academia, government science, or industry. You will also benefit from time spent interacting with professional volcanologists, including geologists, hydrologists, seismologists, and geochemists, in both field and office settings. At the end of the summer, you will be well prepared to collect, analyze, and interpret geodetic data for your own needs and will have gained considerable experience with volcanic environments. Mentor: The mentor for this opportunity is Emily Montgomery-Brown (View email address on click.appcast.io). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s). Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 15, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for 10 weeks, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DOI and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full time. Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate. Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USGS. Participants do not become employees of USGS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
