Deputy Sheriff

Deputy Sheriff Performs protective service work in the Roanoke City Jail. Applicable to a combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation. Must possess a valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and meet the following vision requirements: 20/30 in the better eye corrected and 20/40 in the worse eye corrected. Uncorrected vision must be less than 20/60 and corrected to 20/30 or better in the better eye (or 20/40 or better in the worse eye). Applicants with uncorrected vision of 20/20 or better in both eyes are disqualified. Must successfully complete a thorough background investigation and physical examination, live within fifty (50) road miles of the Sheriff’s Office, and be at least 18 years old. Applicants must submit to a drug screening and psychological test. Shift work, including weekends and holidays, is required. Bilingual Spanish/English speakers are encouraged. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned Maintains care and custody of inmates Processes inmates into custody, conducts searches and inventories personal property, provides clothing, bedding, eating utensils and gives inmate orientation Ensures security of courtrooms prior to and during court sessions Serves and executes all processes issued from General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile Court, including out‑of‑state processes requiring personal service Conducts periodic security checks of inmates in living areas within the jail and court facilities Ensures that special needs of prisoners are met Transports and supervises the movement of prisoners to and from court and as otherwise required Serves notices on executions, levies on personal property and seizes property when bond is furnished Ensures that offenders are fingerprinted and processed in accordance with departmental policies, laws, and regulations Handles emergencies such as fire evacuations, riots, disturbances, and hostage situations in jail or courthouse Responds to and resolves incidents involving physical confrontations between inmates Maintains automated inmate records, including access to VCIN and NCIC Testifies in court proceedings in both criminal and civil cases Provides direction and supervision for inmate community work programs Monitors camera and surveillance equipment in the main control room Ensures proper security of inmates, staff, and visitors to court and jail facilities Ensures proper order and decorum among inmates Enforces institution rules and regulations Prepares reports and other daily records Provides information legally permissible to citizens, police officers, and other criminal‑justice agencies Performs medical screening on inmates upon commitment Maintains financial records and reports and custody and accountability for inmate funds Ensures that inmate records are current and up to date Ensures proper retention, storage and destruction of departmental records Ensures that inmate sentences are legally calculated and served in accordance with departmental policy and existing laws and regulations Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications High school diploma or General Education Development (GED); related experience and/or training in public and personal contact work preferably related to law‑enforcement activities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of all requirements as prescribed by State regulations, including a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries orally and in writing and to present information and answer questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Reasoning ability: define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret diverse instructions. Physical ability to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear often; sit occasionally; lift and move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Physical Demands The employee must regularly stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee occasionally sits. The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required are close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The work environment includes regular exposure to noise, physical traffic, and potential conflicts, typical of a jail and courthouse setting. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job. Benefits Paid Leave: Time off available for use with supervisor approval. The first 24 consecutive leave hours for any illness must be charged to paid leave, with additional time charged to extended illness leave. Hours of Paid Leave Accrual: 0‑4 years: 12 hours per month 5‑9 years: 14 hours per month 10‑14 years: 16 hours per month 15‑19 years: 17 hours per month 20‑24 years: 18 hours per month 25+ years: 20 hours per month Extended Illness Leave: Accrues at 6 hours per month (9 hours per month for fire suppression employees). Funeral Leave: Up to three consecutive days. Military Leave: Twenty‑one work days per Federal fiscal year. Holidays: 96 hours of annual paid holiday time. Mental Health & Well‑Being Leave: 24 hours (34 for Fire Suppression) upon hire; no certification required; leave is not paid upon separation. Health Insurance Options: Four coverage types available—Employee only, Employee + 1 Child, Employee + Spouse & Family—through payroll deduction. Three Aetna Health Plan options are offered: PPO 750 PPO/HRA 1500 PPO/HDHP‑HSA Dental Insurance: Four coverage types—Family, Employee & Spouse, Employee & Child, Employee only—through payroll deduction. Monthly rates are listed separately per plan. Life Insurance: Provided at no cost; coverage equal to salary rounded to the next highest thousand and then doubled for accidental death. Optional Life Insurance: Employee‑paid, various amounts available through payroll deduction. Long‑Term Disability Insurance: Monthly benefit to assist with bills and standard of living when disabled; annual cost calculated at 0.255% of salary; employer contributes half that amount. Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary to a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program, with vesting after five years. Defined Benefit Pension Plan and Hybrid Program details are as per municipal regulations. Other Voluntary Benefits: Critical illness, accident insurance, hospital indemnity, and other protection plans are offered via payroll deduction. Vision Insurance: Paid by employee, includes annual routine exam and discounts.
