Job Description

This role focuses on performing preventative and reactive mechanical and basic electrical maintenance on a wide range of industrial production equipment during 2nd shift. The Maintenance Mechanic ensures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of machinery by conducting routine inspections, troubleshooting issues, and completing repairs in a timely manner. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, solid basic electrical skills, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the maintenance and production teams.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, including lubing, greasing, and inspecting components for wear, damage, or potential problems on a regular schedule.

• Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on equipment such as band saws, cut-off saws, horizontal contour cutters, laser cutters, presses up to 20 tons, slitters, 400 HP grinders, glue machines, rollers, conveyors, and industrial robots (ABB, Fanuc, Motoman).

• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including cylinders, valves, hoses, and related components.

• Service and repair motors up to 400 HP, as well as gears, bearings, fans, and other rotating equipment.

• Apply basic electrical knowledge to work safely with 480V 3-phase systems, including performing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and using a voltmeter to verify power and diagnose issues.

• Check and replace breakers, fuses, sensors, and other basic electrical components as needed to maintain equipment reliability.

• Read and interpret electrical schematics and equipment documentation to support troubleshooting and repairs.

• Use a tablet to log work orders, document repairs, and record preventative maintenance activities accurately and promptly.

• Collaborate with production and maintenance team members to prioritize work, minimize downtime, and support continuous improvement efforts.

• Train on 1st shift initially to learn equipment, processes, and safety procedures before transitioning to 2nd shift.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and follow all safety policies, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment.

• Utilize basic hand tools and a personal toolbox while using provided power and specialty tools appropriately.

• Communicate clearly with supervisors and teammates about equipment status, recurring issues, and recommended improvements.

• Support multi-craft maintenance activities as needed, including basic fabrication and machine shop tasks if experienced.

Essential Skills

• At least 3 years of experience performing preventative maintenance, including lubing, greasing, and inspecting components for wear and potential problems.

• At least 3 years of mechanical troubleshooting and repair experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, gears, bearings, and fans.

• Basic electrical knowledge working with systems up to 480V 3-phase, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe work practices.

• Ability to use a voltmeter to verify power, diagnose electrical issues, and support troubleshooting activities.

• Experience checking and replacing breakers, fuses, and sensors as part of equipment maintenance and repair.

• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and equipment documentation at a basic level.

• Ownership and use of basic hand tools and a personal toolbox; ability to use provided power and specialty tools safely.

• Strong math skills and the ability to read and use a tape measure accurately.

• Ability to use a tablet or similar device to log jobs, enter work orders, record repairs, and document preventative maintenance.

• Willingness and ability to train on 1st shift before moving to 2nd shift.

• Demonstrated initiative, reliability, and a team-oriented mindset with a consistent work history.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 3 or more years of industrial multi-craft maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

• Journeyman Millwright certification or equivalent training and experience.

• Fabrication experience, including welding and the ability to bend, cut, and straighten metal components.

• Experience using machine shop equipment such as lathes, mills, and cut-off saws.

• PLC knowledge, particularly with Allen-Bradley and Siemens systems, to assist with troubleshooting and process improvements.

• Comfort working around industrial robots (ABB, Fanuc, Motoman) and automated equipment.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.

Work Environment

This role is on 2nd shift, Monday through Friday, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., providing a consistent schedule within a structured manufacturing environment. The facility is clean, organized, bright, and well-maintained, with machinery, piping, and ceilings painted white to enhance visibility and create a professional atmosphere. A tricycle and tablet are provided to help technicians move efficiently throughout the plant and document work in real time. While there is a chemical smell in one specific area where ingredients are mixed to make foam, the rest of the plant maintains a clean and orderly setting. The environment includes a variety of industrial equipment, including saws, presses, grinders, conveyors, glue machines, and robotic systems, offering exposure to modern manufacturing technologies and tools within a safety-focused culture.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elkhart, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $29.15 - $33.88/hr.
