Principal Analyst - Lower 48 Upstream Research

Wood Mackenzie is a leading analytics and insights provider in the energy and natural resources landscape. As part of the US Lower 48 Upstream Research team, the Principal Analyst will monitor and assess key events and commercial developments across the upstream industry. The analyst will gather and analyze industry data, producing high‑quality research through articles, presentations, economic models, and written reports. The role requires connecting large datasets, leveraging valuation expertise, and forming opinions on corporate strategies, business environment, exploration, M&A deals, petroleum economics, government energy policy, and regional geopolitics. Role Purpose Contribute to strategic priorities and objectives of the region/sector/specialist area; establish and maintain close relationships with senior/executive level clients across the United States onshore region; support junior and middle managers; help recruit, develop, and retain staff; collaborate with commercial colleagues to build a lucrative business; deliver industry‑leading upstream research; model and align cross‑team or pan‑sectoral issues. Key Responsibilities Contribute to strategic planning and decision‑making within business area, ensuring programmes and objectives are aligned with strategic goals. Accountable for quality and effectiveness of content or work programmes in the United States Lower 48. Play an integral role in expanding our commercial business in the United States Lower 48, working closely with Sales and Consulting teams. Build and maintain a strong network within United States Lower 48 clients and prospects. Contribute to regional and global thought leadership research efforts. Communicate and share research and opinions with executive clients and prospects. About you Minimum 8+ years of relevant, professional experience in the onshore upstream sector. Relevant educational background, ideally in Engineering/Geosciences or Business/Economics. A network of industry contacts for primary research or event participation. Experience building upstream asset cashflows, discounted cashflow models, and understanding valuation elements. Deep experience in stakeholder engagement and management. Strong blend of technical skills and commercial acumen. Track record of demonstrating differentiated values and behaviours. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrable curiosity with a record of impactful innovation. Excellent data reading, manipulation and analysis skills. Expectations Hybrid working: physically present in the office at least 2 days per week. No full‑time remote option. Flexibility to accommodate different time zones due to global team.
