Description Position: EEG / Evoked Potential / IOM Technician – Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Location: Bangor, Maine Work Type: Full Time Work Schedule: Variable Summary Performs inpatient/outpatient EEG procedures under the direct supervision of a Level III or Level IV END tech. Performs one of three inpatient/outpatient Evoked Potential procedures, under direct supervision of a Level IV END tech. Learns to perform ambulatory EEG monitoring and one of six intraoperative monitoring (IOM) procedures with supervision. Responsibilities Demonstrate positive interpersonal skills with patients, families, laboratory staff, physicians and other hospital staff. Participate in conferences and technical meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Show commitment to cooperation and to satisfying the needs of hospital guests and patients. Provide patient comfort, privacy, safety, and respond appropriately to changes in condition. Educate patients about procedures via written and/or verbal explanation in language appropriate to listener. Protect patient confidentiality per policy. Coordinate patient care activities with other sections of the department and other patient care areas; collaborate effectively with all department staff. Communicate effectively, using proper grammar, courtesy, and discretion, and introduce self by name, addressing patient appropriately. Notify appropriate personnel regarding transport needs of inpatients upon completion of procedure. Engage polite, articulate telephone technique; relay information accurately. Make timely decisions, handle situations, refer to appropriate person when necessary, channel suggestions and criticism constructively. Show willingness to learn new methods of performance of job duties. Maintain calm, composed demeanor under stressful situations. Remain flexible and accept changes in assignments, scheduled hours, or call rotation. Apply good body mechanics techniques; attend annual in-service. Keep abreast of new technology, procedures, techniques, equipment, and supplies; demonstrate interest in learning. Attend at least 75% of staff meetings; participate in discussion, idea generation, and solutions to improve departmental activities; read minutes when absent. Participate in department or external in-service programs to obtain or maintain certification and licensure. Rotate assignment within department if necessary. Practice AIDET with all patient encounters. Measure electrode placement accurately, applying the International 10-20 System; ensure impedances meet laboratory standards. Write comprehensive patient histories; gather seizure types, last seizure date, neurologic symptoms, and medications; explain test procedure to patient and family. Perform digital EEG records (routine, sleep, bedside, electrocerebral silence recordings) with indirect supervision. Learn to perform special digital EEG procedures (intensive care nursery, electrocerebral inactivity). Learn visual evoked potentials according to laboratory standards. Learn to perform long‑term video EEG monitoring on hospital inpatients, including ICU setting. Learn to perform 24‑72 hour ambulatory digital EEG recordings. Learn intraoperative digital EEGs, evoked potentials, digital spontaneous EMG, triggered EMG, spinal screw stimulation, threshold testing, and train‑of‑four recordings in the OR. Follow the “Stat” procedure; maintain CPR certification. Follow “Fire Safety” and “Hazardous Materials” safety procedures and attend annual in-service. Demonstrate knowledge of the Disaster Plan. Participate in call schedule as required or assigned. Implement alternative methods or adjust controls to obtain optimal recording. Recognize artifacts; document, eliminate or take proper measures to monitor artifact. Take appropriate actions during patient emergencies; ensure patient safety (electrical). Follow basic infection control standards for patient and equipment. Keep equipment clean and in working order; perform calibrations and report malfunctions to senior tech/department head promptly. Apply knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, electronics, computer operation, digital EEG instrumentation, pattern recognition, and pharmacologic conditions influencing EEG. Ensure exam rooms are clean, ready, with adequate supplies, emergency supplies, oxygen, and suction equipment. Operate and maintain all equipment responsibly; report unsafe conditions or malfunctions immediately. Follow infection control policy and practice sterile techniques where required. Report unsafe practices to department head. Complete procedures within established RVU time frames while maintaining quality. Seek assignments proactively when the area is not busy.
