Dispatcher I/Dispatcher II (On-Call/As Needed)

Position Overview Arcadia Police Department is seeking Dispatchers on an as‑needed basis. Two levels are available: Dispatchers I and Dispatchers II. Hiring Process Applicants must submit the City application and required documents, pass the POST Entry‑Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery, attend oral interviews, and complete background, psychological, and medical examinations. Successful candidates will join the Dispatch Unit. Hourly Wage Dispatcher I: $27.89 – $34.79 per hour Dispatcher II: $32.31 – $40.34 per hour Required Documents Certified typing certificate (≤12 months old, 35 WPM net) Valid POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certification (Dispatcher II only) Key Responsibilities Receive calls for service from the public and identify the nature and location of emergencies. Operate the CAD system to determine priority and dispatch appropriate emergency units. Maintain continuous contact with calling parties and responding units. Maintain daily logs of all field calls and dispatched units. Use telecommunications equipment to coordinate calls, including multi‑line telephones, two‑way radios, teletype, and 911 monitoring equipment. Coordinate with Emergency Management Agency, Civil Defense and other agencies during disasters or severe weather. Perform record‑keeping, filing, indexing, and clerical support related to emergency services. Operate and perform minor maintenance on communications equipment and other office equipment. Prepare alarm response logs, tabulate responses, and assist with authorizations for billing services. Enter and manage data in NCIC, CAP, and other databases for records‑bureau support. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Attend training and information sessions to stay current on local government resources. Perform other related duties as assigned. Job‑Related and Essential Qualifications Dispatcher I Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Knowledge of modern office practices, record‑keeping, and public‑interaction practices. Skill to operate emergency communications equipment and perform minor maintenance. Skill to type at 35 WPM and enter data efficiently. Ability to learn equipment, maps, hazardous‑materials procedures, and dispatch protocols. Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment, and communicate clearly with upset citizens. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and make prompt decisions in routine and non‑routine situations. Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks and maintain confidentiality. Experience in emergency services dispatching is highly desirable. Completed twelfth grade or equivalent; specialized training in emergency management and telecommunications operations. Must obtain POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certification after probation. Must possess a typing certificate within 12 months. Dispatcher II All qualifications for Dispatcher I plus Knowledge of operational characteristics of communications equipment used in an area of emergency dispatch. Knowledge of city streets, boundaries, zones, and maps. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Skill to operate full range of emergency communications equipment including CAD, NCIC, windows‑based systems, and other equipment. Skill to train new dispatchers. Experience: Two years of prior related experience within the past five years as a public‑safety or law‑enforcement dispatcher. License or certificate: Valid POST Dispatcher/Telecommunications certification at time of appointment. Typing certificate within 12 months. Physical and Work‑Environment Requirements Ability to sit for long periods, reach, work in an enclosed environment with limited mobility, and be available for shift work.
