Police Officer
To perform a variety of complex tasks as a police officer in the activities of the Police Department. The police officer shall perform all assigned tasks from police department administration, which include responding to calls for service, routine patrol, enforcement of all state and local laws, municipal ordinance and code enforcement, traffic direction and enforcement, security at civic and school related events, and all other duties assigned as needed. Officers work for at least 160 hours per month working assigned shifts on the day, afternoon, or night shift patrol.
Police officers are expected to follow all administrative and operational policy directives of the police department, organizational rules in the established code of conduct, as well as the City of Milton employee handbook.
The police officer works under direction of the Chief of Police. General day-to-day supervision, administrative direction, and performance evaluation shall be received from the Patrol Sergeant.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Routine Patrol - Operation of marked and unmarked squad vehicles, safe operation of said equipment within a marked or unmarked vehicle, including state certification in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC). Respond to all calls for service, utilize all necessary law enforcement equipment in vehicle and on duty belt, and complete appropriate investigations. The position is a fully-sworn police officer position with full-arrest powers as defined by statute, sworn to uphold and follow all local, state, and federal laws in application of police procedure.
- Law Enforcement - Enforcement of all state criminal and traffic laws, local ordinances and municipal codes. Make appropriate discretionary enforcement decisions and complete appropriate paperwork for enforcement actions such as police reports, citations and other necessary paperwork and referrals to appropriate criminal justice agencies
- Traffic Direction - Direct traffic as needed or requested for civic events and/or school related functions, funeral processions, or other events as needed.
- Security - Provide preventative patrol through presence and security checks at assigned co-curricular events for the Milton School District, City of Milton civic events, or other events as assigned by Police Administration.
- Court Testimony - Appear and testify in municipal court as requested for all enforcement action taken as a patrol officer. Appearances are mandated through subpoena.
- Training - Maintain active Wisconsin LESB Certification as a certified police officer in the State of Wisconsin. This requires attending 24 hours of re-certification training annually.
- Firearms Qualification and EVOC Certification/CPR - All officers must attend firearms training and successfully qualify once every 12 months and EVOC training once every two years. Officers shall also attend CPR/AED certification training as needed.
- Staff Development - Officers are expected to attend all mandatory staff meetings.
- Shift Work - Works assigned shifts in the patrol division as needed and/or scheduled to include day, night and afternoon shifts on all different days of the week and holidays as needed.
- Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Management - With Chief of Police and Administration, actively participates directly in the preparation of a comprehensive general plan for the emergency preparedness of the City; works closely with City staff and external agencies in the event of an emergency or natural disaster and appropriately briefs police administration about critical incidents as they unfold.
- Confidentiality - Responds to public inquiries and complaints regarding police practices and actions; ensures that proper follow up promptly occurs by reporting them to police administration, in accordance with department policy. Maintain confidentiality about all sensitive and/or on-going investigations within the police department in accordance with organizational policy and/or directives.
- Teamwork - Willing to commit to a teamwork environment; interested in understanding and participating in the operations of various work shifts; interested in promoting opportunities for professional growth and advancement for Department staff.
- Active participant in police department team meetings.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- High School diploma and 60 college credits.
- WI LESB certification, certifiable by the WI LESB, and/or ability to be accepted into and complete the Law Enforcement Academy.
- Driver License and good driving record.
- Ability to possess a firearm.
- No felony or domestic abuse convictions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Demonstrated skills and ability to actively participate through citizen interaction, previous police experience, community policing, investigation and community relations.
- Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously and perform essential functions of the position.
- Demonstrated ability to work with various community members and local officials.
- Knowledge of communication systems (radios, MDT's), desktop computer networks, word processing, statistical methods, spreadsheets, e-mail and Internet.
- Familiarity with local, state and federal laws and proper police procedure as they apply to them.
- Ability to maintain high levels of physical fitness necessary to perform the duties of the position.
- Specific knowledge in the following and adhering to policy department rules and regulation. Basic knowledge of all standard law enforcement equipment and its use and application.

- Ability to operate equipment and machinery with some requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as computer keyboard/typewriter, firearms, restraint devices, squad car, binoculars, photocopier, intoximeter, radios, tape recorder, fax machine, alarms, common mechanic's tools and measuring devices.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring high skills such as using firearms and Defense and Arrest Tactics (DAAT). Ability to struggle (fight) to protect self or others and overcome active resistance.
- Ability to exert physical effort in work, typically involving some combination of walking, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, climbing, carrying, pushing and pulling.
- Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and ingredients.
- Ability to sustain prolonged visual and audio concentration.
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work conditions which require exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, irate individuals, intimidation, odors, toxic agents, violence, death, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, disease, and/or dust can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury. This exposure may be unsafe and/or uncomfortable and presents a risk of injury or death.
