Physician (Chief Hospitalist)

Summary The Wilmington VAMC in Wilmington, DE is recruiting a Hospitalist to serve as Chief Hospitalist. The position is accountable to the Chief of Medicine Services for ensuring effective delivery of inpatient medical care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. Qualifications Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) specified in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy). Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an institution approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed. Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification; or one year of post‑medical‑school training approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) under specific conditions. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: 3‑5 years as a hospitalist. Previous supervisory or team‑leader position. Physical requirements: ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, perform moderate pulling/pushing, reach above shoulder, use both hands, walk or stand up to 4 hours per day, kneel up to 1 hour, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision 13‑16 inches, far vision 20/20 to 20/40, hearing aid permitted. Duties Provide expert treatment to patients in inpatient settings, including Med‑Surg wards and the Intensive Care Unit. Provide patient and family education and demonstrate excellence in all facets of patient care consistent with compliance standards. Provide evaluations for other services (CLC and ED) and perform administrative functions as assigned by the Chief of Medicine Services. Maintain compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care to promote health and treat critical illnesses. Establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and health‑care team members. Adhere to stated policies and provide timely documentation of clinical notes (admissions, progress notes, discharge summaries). Coordinate and communicate treatment plans with inpatient and outpatient providers involved in patient care. Administrative duties (20%): ensure operations and compliance with Veterans Health Administration guidelines; provide leadership as Section Chief; manage employee schedules; maintain call schedule coverage; hold monthly section meetings; allocate resources; develop quality improvement processes and projects; attend staff meetings; work with facility leadership on evaluations and training. Clinical duties (80%): maintain privileges in internal/hospitalist medicine; perform daily patient rounding; supervise medical staff duties; review EMR and determine care plans; transfer and discharge patients; respond to RRTs and code blues; collaborate with other hospital sections. License: one full and unrestricted license from any US state or territory. Continuing medical education: up to $1,000 per year reimbursement for full‑time board‑certified physicians. Malpractice protection: free liability coverage with tail coverage. Contract: no Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
