Reports To: Building Principal and Supervising Special Education Teacher

Employment Status: Classified, Non-Exempt (Full-Time or Part-Time)

Position Summary: The Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with disabilities in accessing their educational program under the direct supervision of a certified Special Education Teacher. Responsibilities include providing instructional, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and personal care support as outlined in each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Assignments may include classroom support, small-group instruction, or dedicated one-on-one support for students with intensive needs.

Essential Duties: Assist in implementing instructional activities, accommodations, and IEP goals under the direction of the supervising teacher. Provide one-on-one and small-group academic support. Reinforce teacher-directed lessons and encourage student independence. Support positive behavior interventions and behavior support plans. Assist students during classroom instruction, transitions, lunch, recess, electives, field trips, and community-based learning activities. Collect student data and maintain accurate documentation as directed. Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, and administrators to support student success. Maintain confidentiality and follow all district policies and procedures. Intensive Student Support When assigned to a student with intensive needs, the paraprofessional will: Provide individualized support throughout the school day as directed by the supervising Special Education Teacher. Assist with communication systems, sensory supports, behavioral interventions, and daily living skills. Support student safety while promoting independence and participation in school activities. Implement behavior intervention plans and collect instructional and behavioral data. Assist with personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, mobility, and hygiene, when required.

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Meet Alaska requirements for paraprofessional employment. Ability to work effectively with students with diverse educational, behavioral, and physical needs. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift or assist students, bend, kneel, stand for extended periods, and respond appropriately during behavioral or medical emergencies.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in classrooms, playgrounds, community settings, and other educational environments. Assignments may involve students requiring intensive academic, behavioral, communication, or personal care support.
