Emergency Room Financial Counselor

Onsite at Methodist Hospital. Full-time 40hrs a week with the options of 8a-4:30p, 9a-5:30p, 10a-6:30p, 11a-7:30p, or 12p-8:30p.

The Emergency Room Financial Counselor serves as a key member of the Patient Financial Services/Revenue Cycle team within the Methodist Emergency Department. This position works directly with patients and families to identify financial needs, verify coverage, assess potential financial assistance options, establish payment arrangements, and help resolve financial barriers associated with healthcare services.

The Financial Counselor must balance compassionate patient interaction with effective account resolution and revenue-cycle practices. Because the position operates within the Emergency Department, the counselor must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing multiple cases, handling sensitive financial conversations, and collaborating closely with clinical, registration, social work, case management, and revenue-cycle teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous hospital or Emergency Department financial counseling experience.
• Experience with self-pay accounts, Medicaid eligibility, Medicaid-pending accounts, financial assistance, charity care, payment plans, or healthcare collections.
• Knowledge of healthcare insurance verification, patient responsibility, account follow-up, and revenue-cycle processes.
• Experience working directly with uninsured and underinsured patient populations.
• Experience using electronic health record, patient accounting, eligibility, or financial-assistance systems.
• Bilingual communication skills are a plus.

For those serving as the Individual Solutions Coordinator (ISC), a current Indiana State Navigator's license is required. At least one year of experience in hospital or physician Revenue Cycle strongly preferred. Requires working knowledge of patient registration and financial clearance. Requires a high level of interpersonal and problem solving skills. Requires effective written and verbal communication skills. Requires the ability to work within a team and maintain collaborative relationships. Requires the ability to take initiative and meet objectives.
