ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR OF MATHEMATICS

JOB DESCRIPTIONPOSITION: Adjunct Instructor of MathematicsDIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Comp. Science & Technology | School of Arts & SciencesFLSA STATUS: Part-Time, Non-ExemptREPORTS TO: Chair, Computer Science & Technology DivisionThe Adjunct Instructor of Mathematics is a part-time position employed for a specific assignment and specified academic term with primary responsibilities for teaching assigned undergraduate mathematics courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online formats. The instructor will support student learning in general education and program-required mathematics courses, use the University learning management system, follow approved course syllabi and institutional guidelines, and provide timely feedback to students. This position will report directly to the Chair of the Computer Science & Technology Division.Essential FunctionsProvide instruction for assigned undergraduate mathematics courses, which may include developmental mathematics, college algebra, quantitative reasoning, statistics, pre-calculus, calculus, discrete mathematics, or other mathematics courses based on qualifications and departmental needs.Prepare and deliver course content consistent with the approved syllabus, catalog description, course learning outcomes, and institutional policies.Use effective teaching strategies that promote student engagement, mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and confidence in mathematics.Support student success in high-demand mathematics courses by providing clear explanations, timely feedback, and appropriate academic support within the scope of the assigned course.Maintain regular communication with students through class meetings, office hours or scheduled availability, email, and the learning management system.Grade assignments, quizzes, exams, and other assessments promptly and fairly according to the syllabus and approved grading standards.Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance as required by University policy.Assess student learning outcomes for assigned courses and submit required course-level assessment information when requested.Use the University learning management system and approved instructional technologies to post course materials, communicate with students, manage grades, and support online or technology-enhanced instruction.Follow institutional policies related to academic integrity, attendance, accessibility, FERPA, student support, and classroom management.Participate in required orientation, training, or meetings directly related to adjunct teaching responsibilities.Perform other course-related duties that logically relate to the assigned instructional responsibilities.The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong knowledge of mathematics and the ability to teach undergraduate-level mathematics clearly and effectively.Ability to teach a range of commonly offered undergraduate mathematics courses, especially general education and service courses that support multiple academic programs.Ability to support students with varied levels of mathematical preparation, including students who may need additional structure, examples, practice, and feedback.Commitment to student-centered teaching, inclusive classroom practices, and academic success for diverse student populations.Ability to use a learning management system such as Blackboard or Canvas for course delivery, communication, assignments, assessments, and grade reporting.Ability to use common instructional and productivity technologies, including Microsoft Office or similar tools.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet course deadlines, submit grades on time, and maintain accurate records.Professionalism, dependability, confidentiality, and responsiveness in communication with students, faculty, and administrators.Ability to teach in face-to-face, hybrid, evening, weekend, or online formats when assigned and when consistent with departmental needs.Familiarity with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education.Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.Minimum RequirementsThis position requires a Master’s degree and 18 graduate credit hours in the mathematics teaching area.Evidence of plans to continue scholarly and professional growth.Teaching experience at the college level, including experience as a teaching assistant while in graduate school.Instructor is a non-tenure track position, but this does not preclude promotion to Assistant professor with the acquisition of a terminal degree in an assigned teaching area.The potential to have a positive impact through service that represents the University on campus and within the greater community.Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends.Preferred RequirementsPrior college-level teaching experience in mathematics, including experience as an adjunct instructor, lecturer, teaching assistant, or instructor of record.Experience teaching high-demand undergraduate mathematics courses such as developmental mathematics, college algebra, quantitative reasoning, statistics, pre-calculus, calculus, or discrete mathematics.Experience teaching both in-person and online or hybrid mathematics courses.Experience supporting student success in gateway mathematics courses with high enrollment or varied student preparation levels.Familiarity with Blackboard, Canvas, Pearson MyLab Math, Cengage, or similar mathematics courseware platforms.Experience with course assessment, student learning outcomes, and basic accreditation-related documentation at the course level.Pre-Employment RequirementsCriminal background checkFlorida Memorial University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
