Position Summary

We are seeking a patient, dependable, and professional Driving Instructor to provide behind-the-wheel instruction to students throughout East Hampton and surrounding towns. In this role, you will evaluate driving skills, teach New York State traffic rules, demonstrate defensive driving techniques, and prepare students for their NYS DMV Road Tests.

Key Responsibilities

• Behind-the-Wheel Instruction: Conduct one-on-one driving lessons tailored to student skill levels (beginners to advanced drivers).
• Road Test Preparation: Teach essential maneuvers, including parallel parking, 3-point turns, lane changes, and highway merging, as well as local road test routes.
• Safety & Vehicle Control: Maintain a calm, encouraging environment while controlling dual-pedal vehicles to ensure safety at all times.
• Progress Tracking: Provide constructive feedback after each session and keep clear records of lesson schedules and student development.
• Compliance: Adhere strictly to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV) standards and guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Age: Minimum 21 years old (per NYS DMV regulations).
• Driver’s License: Valid New York State driver’s license held continuously for a minimum of 2 years with a clean driving record (no major violations or suspensions within the last 2 years).
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• NYS DMV Certification:
• • Possess a current NYS DMV Driving School Instructor Certificate (MV-524) , OR
  • Be willing to complete the NYS DMV instructor certification process (including background check, vision test, written test, and 30-hour Methods and Content Course for In-Car Instruction/MCCII). Paid training/sponsorship available for qualified candidates.
• Background Check: Must clear a criminal background check and child abuse registry screening.
• Attributes: Exceptional patience, strong communication skills, punctuality, and a professional demeanor.
• Local Knowledge: Familiarity with East Hampton, local roads (Route 27, village streets, local highways), and East End driving conditions is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience as a certified driving instructor or educator.
• Bilingual ability (English / Spanish) is a strong plus to support the local East End community.
• Availability during peak scheduling hours, including weekends, after-school hours, and summer seasons.
