Job Description


The Student Success center at ECS is currently seeking a career advisor to deliver services to students enrolled in its various majors. The career advisor is responsible for counseling and training students on career skills, as well as supporting special events. This individual acts as a liaison to the appropriate academic faculty at Syracuse University, as well as to employer partners locally and nationally.

Education and Experience


Competitive candidates will have a bachelor's degree and at least 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in a university or a professional setting.

Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in college career services or related environment and exposure to working with diverse populations.
• Team orientation with interest and ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated willingness to take initiative and aptitude to work independently.
• Good organizational skills and ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and oversee events. Skilled in use of online career resources, career assessments, career center management system and other online resources.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional relationships with students, alumni, employers, colleagues, faculty and staff.
• Solid written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills. Solid computer skills including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, electronic communications, databases, Internet; knowledge of the world of work.
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills required.

Responsibilities

• Counseling, Advising, & Coaching: Provide career counseling, advising, or coaching to students regarding aligning their major with their interests and talents.
• Assisting them on all career issues (e.g. internship searches, finding mentors, career transitions, resume/application material critiques, job search strategies, networking tips, interview preparation).
• Teaching & Training: Lead career skills training workshops that facilitate skill development and exploration of relevant career opportunities.
• Present and deliver training using contemporary best practices.
• Develop new programming, e.g. exploration trips, to address needs of existing, underserved and new student populations.
• Tracking metrics on all career related outcomes, such as student appointments, career education engagement, internships, and placement into career and graduate school.
• Programs & Major Events: Support planning of special events that facilitate career exploration and progress, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to ECS students, as well as employer information sessions as needed.
• Develop and sustain relationships across Syracuse University in general, with the Central Career team, and with the external community to support the success of programs and events.
• Pilot creative approaches to building relationships with employers and solidifying partnerships.
• Other duties as assigned.
