Location: Main office in Raleigh, NC; position is hybrid and allows remote work based on the team's needs and priorities for 2026; requires occasional travel across the Triangle and other parts of the state.

About the position: NCAAT is seeking a full-time Chief of Staff to lead and oversee individuals who lead teams of community organizers, policy advocates, communications professionals, and voter specialists. The Chief of Staff will ensure each team has clarity of role and vision to ensure they are able to address issues and develop campaigns that build collective power , foster leadership, and increase the representation of Asian American communities across North Carolina.
The role requires strong management skills, the ability to troubleshoot challenges as they arise, and a deep understanding of resource allocation, effective time management, and fostering partnerships within multiracial and multiethnic coalitions. Reporting to the Executive Director and a member of the Executive Team, this candidate should be well-versed in best practices for both project and team
management; create a culture of respect and belonging, ensuring that every team member feels valued and heard; and foster a leadership style rooted in the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. As a leader overseeing a team of up to four direct reports, this role is critical in guiding and empowering staff to build stronger connectivity, cohesion, and collaboration across the organization, ensuring that the mission and values are reflected in everything NCAAT does.
In essence, we are seeking an individual who can assess how best to use the Executive Director's time. This individual will ensure the most critical work and decisions are elevated while handling other decisions, be a communicator who can link different departments and teams, and be an impartial broker when the Executive Director needs a wide-ranging view from a confidant and through partner while staying above the fray.
Role Responsibilities:
- Support the Executive Director on strategic leadership, prioritization, and communication
- Serve as a trusted thought partner, confidant, and problem-solver
- Serve as the “go-to” when immediate issues/needs arise and propose implementable solutions.
- Elevate strategic decision points, taking into account overall goals and the team's perspectives. Ensure responsive decision-making.
- Steer and advise on where the Executive Director’s time should be dedicated
- Work closely with the Executive Director’s EA to manage competing priorities and meeting requests, allocating time and attention. This includes ensuring that the Executive Director’s involvement in projects or decision-making processes occurs at key times when her input and authority are most needed.
- Accompany or represent ED at internal and external meetings to stay up to date, spot opportunities for communication or action, and ensure timely follow-through
- Support organization-wide meetings and efforts, ensuring that the Executive Director’s vision and priorities for team culture and operations are implemented
- Lead and guide the entire staff while directly supervising Senior Directors and a few program leads, providing ongoing guidance, visionary direction, and motivation to drive success and foster a collaborative, high-energy team environment.

- Ensure all staff members understand their role in implementing the organization's vision and priorities and how their work contributes to departmental and organizational success.
- Support the Executive Director with internal, org-wide communication: tracking information to be shared, drafting internal talking points or emails, and flagging opportunities for staff engagement and input.
- People Management and Leadership - A Core Member of the Executive Team
- Manage 4 direct reports of Senior Directors and Directors, to drive excellence and impact in their program areas; coach and support their staff management to achieve program outcomes and NCAAT values.
- Present complex management challenges to the Directors' and Executive Teams for support and a range of perspectives. Assist the Executive Team in effectively addressing and resolving personnel matters.
- Create systems for interdepartmental collaboration and hold department heads accountable for participating in those systems and working towards a greater sense of team.
- Set high performance standards for both self and team, cultivating a positive, results-driven environment, leading by example. Ensure staff accountability by establishing clear, measurable goals.
- Encourage individual ownership and empower staff through effective communication and strategic delegation
- Work with the Executive Team to hire staff as needed; delegate appropriately and ensure strong internal communication and coordination; evaluate performance and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth; and provide oversight to consultants.
- Program Coaching
- Utilize knowledge of the political landscape to help inform the Senior Program Director’s planning and campaign execution
- Coordinate and conduct regular meetings with program units and cross-functional teams to assess progress and identify challenges related to internal processes, implementation mechanisms, and evaluation methodologies.
- Track progress to goals and ensure information and decisions flow to and from ED in a timely and actionable way
- Oversee the Programs team’s budgets, approve and ensure adherence to spending guidelines and deliverables, and adjust goals as necessary.
- Serve as a trusted thought partner, confidant, and problem-solver
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of complex program and project management experience.
- 5+ years of managing high-performing teams and programs to meet ambitious goals within the social services sector.
- Experience in policy advocacy, political campaigns or democracy reform work preferred. Strong dedication to advancing social justice and equity.
- Proven team player with experience in leadership or management roles.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the dependable ability to adapt and build relationships with people from many communities and language backgrounds.
- Solid organizational skills, detail-oriented, and a knack for driving projects from inception to successful completion.
- Skilled at juggling a vibrant array of long-term and short-term projects with ease and energy.
- Expertise in project management approaches, methodologies, and implementations, and project management platforms such as Slack, Asana, and Trello.
- Proficient with digital tools and eager to both learn and teach them to facilitate seamless remote collaboration with a team.
- Connection to and/or deep knowledge of Asian American communities.
- Basic skills in any Asian language are a plus.
- Passionate about staying informed on local, state, and federal policies affecting Asian communities.
- Valid driver’s license and dependable access to a vehicle.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including weekends and evenings during election season.
