This position provides an opportunity to contribute directly to student success and the daily operation of the University by helping ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of Bridgewater State University's fleet and equipment assets. The Motor Equipment Mechanic III performs advanced diagnostics, maintenance, repair, inspection, and evaluation of university vehicles and equipment while providing technical guidance, training, and day-to-day work coordination. The position supports preventative maintenance programs, fleet reliability initiatives, regulatory compliance, and emergency response operations. Responsibilities include working with gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, computerized vehicle diagnostic, and small-engine systems utilizing modern fleet maintenance technologies and industry-standard repair practices. The Vehicle Maintenance operation supports a broad range of critical campus services, including fleet operations, transportation services, grounds maintenance equipment, snow and ice management equipment, generators, campus events, emergency response operations, and other essential university functions. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining the operational readiness, safety, and reliability of these assets while supporting the University's commitment to service excellence and responsible resource stewardship. This position works collaboratively with supervisors, managers, and other University Services staff in support of departmental goals and operational objectives.

Essential Duties include performing advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, computerized control, and small-engine systems. Inspect, test, evaluate, and road-test vehicles and equipment to determine serviceability, operational readiness, and repair requirements. Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment, fleet maintenance management software, manufacturer service information, and industry-standard technologies to identify, document, and resolve vehicle and equipment maintenance issues. Support the implementation and ongoing success of preventative maintenance programs designed to maximize fleet reliability, safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and equipment life. Assist with coordinating maintenance activities and supporting the timely completion of repairs, inspections, preventative maintenance services, and work orders. Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to maintenance personnel and assist with onboarding new employees. Maintain accurate records of repairs, preventative maintenance activities, inspections, warranty information, parts inventory, and equipment history utilizing computerized fleet maintenance management systems. Assist with procurement and inventory management of parts, supplies, tools, equipment, and materials necessary to support vehicle maintenance operations. Support vehicle and equipment inspections, registration activities, equipment evaluations, replacement planning efforts, and vehicle acquisition recommendations. Ensure repairs and maintenance activities comply with applicable safety standards, environmental regulations, vehicle inspection requirements, and university policies. Participate in snow and ice management operations, including operation, maintenance, and repair of snow removal and support equipment. Support university transportation services by maintaining fleet vehicles and equipment utilized for campus operations, transit services, facilities support, grounds maintenance, and emergency response activities. Respond to campus emergencies and support essential university operations as required.

Required Qualifications include at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, cranes, front end loaders, etc. of which (B) at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions include a certificate or diploma from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or above, with a major in automotive shop practice may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience. Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of automotive repair and maintenance. Knowledge of the principles of operation of diesel engines. Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance such as hydraulic lifts, bumper jacks, grinders, buffers and air tools. Knowledge of gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, computerized diagnostic, and small-engine systems. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, provide training, mentor staff, and support collaborative team operations. Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques used in automotive repair and maintenance. Ability to read and interpret documents such as shop manuals, plans, specifications, blueprints, drawings, etc. Ability to exercise sound judgment. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

Preferred Qualifications include Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or the ability to obtain within a specified timeframe after hire. Ability to maintain accurate records and effectively utilize computerized maintenance management systems and diagnostic technologies. Massachusetts Hydraulic Hoisting License or the ability to obtain within a specified timeframe after hire. ASEcertification(s) or equivalent industry certifications. Experience utilizing computerized fleet maintenance management systems, electronic diagnostic equipment, and manufacturer service platforms such as AllData or similar software. Experience supporting fleet operations within higher education, municipal, public sector, transportation, or facilities environments. Experience supporting snow and ice management operations. Experience maintaining transit vehicles, commercial vehicles, grounds equipment, generators, or other specialized fleet assets.
