Position Overview

In a school-based health services context, the Special Education Teacher designs and delivers individualized instruction to students with disabilities, coordinating with health and education professionals to support overall student well-being and learning.

The role centers on IEP development, inclusive instruction, and collaboration with families and school staff to accommodate health-related needs within the educational plan.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) aligned to student goals and health considerations.
• Assess student progress, modify instruction, and document outcomes in appropriate systems.
• Collaborate with school nurses, psychologists, and other specialists to address medical and educational needs.
• Provide accommodations and supports to enable participation in classroom activities and assessments.
• Educate families about IEP goals, progress, and required resources; coordinate with community-based services as needed.
• Monitor student safety, behavior, and social-emotional wellbeing within school settings.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to transition planning when applicable.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.

Licensure:

State teaching license in Special Education (endorsement or eligibility required).

Certifications:

• Special Education endorsement or certification as required by state
• CPR/First Aid certification preferred

Experience or Skills:

Experience delivering instruction to students with diverse needs; strong communication with families and school teams; ability to implement evidence-based teaching strategies and accommodations.

Experience

• Experience teaching in K-12 settings, including students with disabilities.
• Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and implementing IEPs.

Preferred

• Experience with assistive technology and inclusive education strategies.
• Knowledge of 504 plans and health-related accommodations.

Work Environment

School setting with collaboration across teachers, administrators, and health staff.

Typically within a structured schedule, with opportunities for family communication and student progress reporting.
