General Summary
The Paving Superintendent is responsible for leading and managing multiple paving projects from start to finish. This includes coordinating labor, equipment, subcontractors, and material suppliers while ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on time, and within specifications. The Superintendent provides leadership and supervision to assigned employees, overseeing their selection, training, development, and performance management.
This role requires confidentiality, sound judgment, and strong leadership skills . Work hours typically range from 8 to 14 hours per day, Monday through Friday (day or night shifts). Weekend work may be required depending on project schedules. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) is expected.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership
Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and best practices for self and team.
Monitor PPE use and safety behaviors through meetings, coaching, and corrective action when necessary.
Follow Supervisor Safety Procedures Manual (SSPM) including safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting, and employee observations.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and NCDOT guidelines.
Project Management
Manage paving crews, subcontractors, and equipment on multiple job sites.
Coordinate material deliveries with asphalt plants to maintain schedules.
Track and report project progress, schedules, and material usage.
Maintain clean and orderly work areas in compliance with Sunrock, MSHA, and OSHA requirements.
Leadership & Communication
Provide clear direction and oversight to team members and subcontractors.
Train, develop, and evaluate employees to ensure quality and efficiency.
Communicate effectively with customers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
Serve as a role model by demonstrating teamwork, integrity, and professional conduct.
Additional Responsibilities
Support company goals through proactive team participation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Strong knowledge of safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures.
Ability to read and interpret project documents, specifications, and schedules.
Proficient in report writing and clear communication with teams and customers.
Solid math skills, including the ability to compute rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret graphs.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to variable conditions.
Competency in basic computer applications (email, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics).
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and delegate effectively.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate degree in a related field preferred.
Six (6) or more years of relevant paving/construction experience required.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License (required).
QMS Level 1 Roadway Certification (required).
