We believe in empowering self-employed people to enjoy the same tax savings that big companies get, so they can focus on their passion, not paperwork.We're hiring a Software Engineer to help build and scale the systems that power Collective's accounting product, the connection between our members' bank activity, bookkeeping, and tax outcomes. You'll work across the stack on the platform that automates reconciliation, ingests transaction data from our banking and accounting partners, and turns raw financial activity into clean, member-ready books. This is a product engineering role with real ownership, working closely with Product, Design, Operations, and our in-house accounting team to ship fast and iterate based on member and operator feedback. You'll be expected to use modern AI tools and agent-based workflows to accelerate development, improve code quality, and unlock new product capabilities. This role is ideal for engineers who are hungry to grow into broader ownership, think in terms of outcomes, and see AI as a core part of how software gets built today.What you'll do:Build and ship features across the accounting product - from member-facing reconciliation and bookkeeping experiences to internal tooling that powers our accounting and bookkeeping operatorsWork on the integration layer between Collective and our partners that includes extending APIs, handling edge cases, and improving data reliabilityImprove the transaction pipeline that flows from bank feeds through our accounting platform into our data layer, including reliability, observability, and drift detection between source and destinationOwn well-scoped features end-to-end with support from senior engineers to define the approach, build, deploy, instrument, and iteratePartner with Product, Design, and Operations to translate accounting workflows into clean software, and surface engineering tradeoffs earlyUse AI-powered development tools (copilots, code agents, agent workflows) day-to-day to move faster and cut manual overheadClear communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical partnersDemonstrated ability to integrate AI agents and automation into development workflows and product featuresWhat you'll bring:3–4 years of experience building and shipping production software in a product-focused environmentSolid fullstack engineering skills (e.g., Python, Django, React, or similar modern frameworks)Experience integrating with third-party APIs and working with messy, real-world dataHands-on use of AI developer tools (copilots, code agents) in your day-to-day workflow — not just experimentsAbility to take a well-scoped problem and drive it to a shipped, instrumented solution with light guidanceGood product and UX instincts to make sensible scope tradeoffs and ask the right clarifying questions before buildingClear written and verbal communication, especially when explaining tradeoffs to non-engineering partnersFamiliarity with SQL and working with data warehouses (BigQuery a plus)Interest in the accounting / fintech / payroll domain, or a track record of getting up to speed quickly in a new domainWhat we offer:Hybrid Work Model: Based in San Francisco with a balance of in-office and remote flexibility.Fresh Lunch: Provided on in-office days.Commuter Support: $150 monthly reimbursement for transit expenses.Health & Wellness: $200 quarterly reimbursement to support your well-being.Time Off: Flexible PTO plus 14 company holidays.Comprehensive Coverage: 100% medical, dental, and vision for employees; 75% coverage for dependents.Parental Leave: 16 weeks fully paid.Retirement & Ownership: 401k plan plus an equity package.Team Connection: Quarterly virtual events and an annual in-person summit.
