Church Description Central Presbyterian Church is a historic congregation on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Over the past 15 years, the church has experienced a period of remarkable spiritual renewal and is currently home to a culturally diverse body of seasoned leaders, many families, and a dynamic body of students, young professionals, and artists. Central’s vision is to be a church that experiences the transformative power of the gospel and responds in reliance upon the Holy Spirit by following Jesus Christ in his mission to make all things new at Central, in New York City, and throughout the world. Position Description Central Presbyterian Church is seeking a relational and experienced pastor to serve as an inspiring leader and preacher in close partnership with the Senior Pastor. The Pastor of Community and Care should be skilled in grace‑based, biblical teaching from a Reformed perspective, gospel‑centered community formation and pastoral care, and strategic missional outreach to the city. The Pastor of Community and Care will be given opportunities in biblical teaching and discipleship, community formation and pastoral care, Christian education and leadership development, evangelism, mission, service, and the integration of faith and vocation. In addition, the Pastor of Community and Care will be given opportunities to preach and lead worship as the number two pastor on the staff. Qualifications Candidates for this position must demonstrate an enthusiastic desire to serve in local church ministry, as evidenced by a love for people and a gift for encouraging them to grow in their commitment to Christ and his mission to the world, and an understanding of and commitment to the theological convictions, vision and values, and philosophy of ministry of Central. This role requires collaborative leadership and entrepreneurial initiative to develop and expand a growing number of ministry programs within a large and growing church. 5+ years of pastoral ministry experience in the context of the local church An understanding of and commitment to the basic convictions of Reformed theology as expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms An understanding of and commitment to the vision and values and philosophy of ministry of Central Professional demeanor and demonstrated Christian character An evangelistic heart and a passion for sharing the gospel with others An ability to effectively teach and apply a Christ‑centered approach to Scripture and the Christian life A strong work ethic and an ability to carry out the various responsibilities of the position An ability to recruit and develop a committed team of leaders and volunteers Excellent written and oral communication skills Excellent organizational and planning skills High attention to detail and resourceful problem‑solving abilities Self‑motivated and intellectually curious with a desire and propensity to learn and improve Able to handle sensitive and confidential information Personal and Cultural Model a life of Christian faithfulness in reliance upon the Holy Spirit by cultivating one's own spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical life and by prioritizing relationships with one's family. Cultivate a warm, welcoming, strong, and supportive community across the breadth of the church that unites people across different ages, ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. Provide regular opportunities for spiritual growth through worship, prayer, fellowship, Scripture reading, and service to others. Community Formation Help develop the Community Group strategy and oversee all Community Groups together with the Community Formation team. Recruit, train, and oversee Community Group leaders together with the Community Formation team. Help develop, promote, and execute a strategy for the multiplication of Community Groups. Oversee the creation of Community Group studies on a weekly basis together with the Community Formation team. Work in conjunction with the Community Formation team to cultivate an open and authentic community of people across different ages, ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. Visit each Community Group on a rotating schedule for evaluation and assessment together with the Community Formation team. Adapt Community Group curriculum and training materials as needed. Provide ongoing leadership training and assessment for all Community Group leaders. Provide direction and support to the Men’s and Women’s Bible Studies. Christian Education and Discipleship Help develop and implement training that will encourage and equip Christians to share their faith and also support new believers as they strive to grow in grace. Help develop and implement a Christian Education program offering a regular catalog of courses on the Bible, theology, Church history, and practical skills, e.g., “How to Share One’s Faith” or “How to Read the Bible.” Help direct and support special lectures and events. Participate in preaching and worship‑leading opportunities as needed. Pastoral Care Provide pastoral care to those in need of prayer, guidance, and support. Help oversee counseling situations. Recruit, train, and oversee lay leaders seeking to provide biblical counsel to others. Mobilize members of the congregation to provide practical assistance and care to others. Officiate weddings and funerals and provide premarital counseling as needed. Informal interactions with the Executive Director/Pastor are likely to occur on a nearly daily basis, with formal one‑on‑one meetings occurring once per week. The Pastor of Community and Care will meet routinely with the Executive Director/Pastor to discuss quarterly and annual goal setting, performance review, coaching, and career development. Compensation $125,000–$225,000 range for salary and housing allowance depending on experience and ability.
