Job Title Assistant Director, Student Transitions and Family Engagement Summary Assistant Director for Student Transitions and Family Engagement plays an essential role in supporting orientation and transition experiences for new Miami University students. The role collaborates with other university offices to enhance first‑year and transfer student programming, including orientation, transition, first‑year experience courses, pre‑semester, Welcome Weekend, and First 50 Days activities. Responsibilities Assist in implementing orientation programs for more than 4,000 first‑year students, 250 transfer students, and over 4,500 family members annually. Recruit, select, train, mentor, and evaluate undergraduate student leaders. Support development and facilitation of pre‑semester Miami Bound programs, Welcome Weekend and First 50 Days programming. Create print and electronic office communications, including website, newsletters, social media, and printed resources for new students. Collaborate with university offices on their involvement in and representation at orientation and transition programs. Teach one‑credit University 101 courses for new first‑year and/or transfer students. Seek innovative programming strategies to engage first‑year students in their transition process. Contribute to individualized academic advising schedules for new students attending orientation. Plan and execute summer, August, and January orientation programs, including check‑in, session facilitation, logistics, and family programming. Support orientation registration, communications, and presentation content. Participate in orientation planning committees and campus partner meetings. Provide day‑of staffing for office‑led events, including orientation, Welcome Weekend, and Family Weekend programming. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, and development of student leaders (e.g., Student Orientation Undergraduate Leaders and First‑Year Experience Undergraduate Associates). Support Family Weekend and other family‑focused events, including Parents Council meetings and logistics. Assist with student and family inquiries, ensuring timely, accurate, and coordinated communication. Serve on Division of Student Life committees and represent the office at university and divisional events. Contribute to office assessment, planning conversations, and reports. Support the Director and divisional leadership with office initiatives and other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum: Bachelor’s degree completed by the position start date; 1 year of full‑time professional experience in an education or leadership‑related field (experience may be cumulative). Preferred: Master’s degree in student development, higher/adult education, student personnel, student affairs, or related field completed by the position start date; experience working directly with students in a college or university setting; experience in orientation, transition, or first‑year experience programs. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Knowledge and experience coordinating large‑scale events/programming. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or weekends. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of student development theories. Experience working in databases and spreadsheets. Experience with technology, website development, and social media. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively with various constituencies. Ability to complete projects on a timely basis and manage multiple priorities. Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting on data that contributes to continuous improvement and ongoing assessment. Experience teaching or coordinating classroom instruction.
