Orthopedic Technician II – Kaiser Permanente, Panorama City, CA Under administrative supervision by the Department Administrator and under direct clinical supervision by the department physicians and advanced practice providers, the Orthopedic Technician II assists physicians/providers with all routine and advanced orthopedic and orthopedic surgical procedures. Responsibilities include providing written instructions for patients in the use of orthopedic devices and maintaining supplies and equipment, and may provide direction to Orthopedic Technician I or Junior Ortho Tech. Job Summary Provides advanced orthopedic and surgical assistance while upholding Kaiser Permanente policies, principles of responsibility, and applicable state, federal, and local laws. Essential Responsibilities Assist physicians/Providers with all routine and advanced orthopedic and orthopedic surgical procedures. May instruct Orthopedic Technicians I and trainees on casts, traction setups, operating room procedures, and other techniques for patients in the age group served. Perform all duties and responsibilities of an Orthopedic Technician I. Apply casts, splints, traction, or other orthopedic devices when it is a technical function and does not involve choosing the appropriate treatment. Remove casts, splints, and orthopedic devices. Prepare the patient for procedures. Set up instruments and equipment for procedures. Apply and remove bandages and dressings that do not involve debridement. Provide written instructions to patients regarding proper cast care and use of crutches and devices. Remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions after provider-assessed removal. Assist patients in ambulation and transfers. Collect and record patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and basic information about presenting and previous conditions. Record patient care services provided in the medical record. Perform other technical or administrative tasks as required. Operating Room Duties (when delegated) Assist with preparation and draping of the patient. Cut and tie sutures (above fascia, not on deep tissue). Advance but not insert pins or screws in pre‑drilled holes. Apply and hold graspers on tissue during endoscopic surgery. Retract tissue. Tap and mallet on instruments held by the surgeon. Suction blood or other fluids from the operative field. Sponge the operative field. Apply electrocautery through instruments to vessels when the provider is holding instruments. Assist in cleaning wounds and applying dressings. Assist in managing and maintaining the integrity of drains and devices attached to patient. Basic Qualifications Experience: Two (2) years as Orthopedic Technician within the last three (3) years; knowledge of basic human anatomy, fracture types, orthopedic equipment, cast and splint application, and sterile techniques. Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge of cast application, traction, and orthopedic appliance application; competence to work in the operating room under direct supervision. Customer service skills. Education: High school diploma or equivalent; graduate of an accredited Orthopedic Technician program, or military training, or two (2) years of full‑time experience. License, Certification, Registration: Orthopedic Technologist Certificate from National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists; Basic Life Support certification. Additional Requirements On‑call position; days and hours may vary. Work variable hours. Support clinic, operating room, emergency department, and urgent care. External hires must pass a background check/drug screen.
