Operations & Maintenance Technician III - Welder/Fabricator

The Operations & Maintenance Technician III – Welder/Fabricator is a senior‑level role responsible for the design, fabrication, and repair of critical infrastructure within Metropolitan’s water treatment and hydroelectric systems. This position leverages advanced technical expertise to maintain large‑scale utility assets—including pipelines, valves, and turbines—while ensuring the structural integrity of safety equipment such as catwalks, vaults, and guardrails. In this role you will build, maintain, and improve a variety of equipment and fixtures composed of metal and metal alloys or other related materials, supporting the operational core of water and power reliability by meeting or exceeding internal and external customer expectations. Additionally, you will perform welder/fabricator tasks to support the operational core of water and power through welding and fabrication practices applied to creating, maintaining, repairing, and improving equipment and parts essential to operating and supporting systems within the conveyance and distribution system, treatment, and hydroelectric plants as well as other Metropolitan facilities. This position will require travel to various District facilities throughout the service area, often requiring overnight stays in the project area. This opening for the Operations & Maintenance Technician III Welder/Fabricator is in the Construction Services Unit of our Operations Support Services Section at our Lake Mathews Facility in Riverside, CA. What You’ll Do Precision fabrication: design, layout, and fabricate custom parts and equipment for large‑scale water distribution and hydroelectric facilities. Infrastructure repair: perform high‑level welding and repairs on critical assets such as high‑pressure pipelines, feeders, impellers, and housing structures. System maintenance: maintain and refurbish specialized water utility assemblies, including large gates, valves, and shafts. Facility safety & access: fabricate and install essential structural components such as cabinets, vaults, catwalks, guardrails, and drain covers. Travel to numerous District facilities throughout the service area, often requiring overnight stays.

SCHEDULE

4/10 – (Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 4:30pm) Qualifications High‑school diploma or high‑school equivalency certificate plus three (3) years of practical experience as a welder/fabricator, or completion of a recognized welder/fabricator trade training program in an industrial environment. Certifications and licenses: Valid California Class C Driver’s License, Forklift Certification, Manlift Certification, Respirator Certification, and Welding Certification.
