Job Description – FY27: Teacher, Special Education, Classic Autism (ABA Therapy Skills Needed), Rock Creek Valley ES, 1.0 FTE (260040S) Job Description Job Specific Information The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. Summary Description Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Special Requirements Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments. Thorough knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Knowledge of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians, appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS). Education, Training, Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Proficiency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Certificate/Licence: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
