Critical Operations Engineer II We are currently hiring for the Swing Shift 3:00 pm-11:30 pm, Tuesday – Saturday. Mechanical responsibilities will include chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems such as rooftop units, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems. Electrical responsibilities will include electrical/critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main switchgear through the UPS systems out to the customer load. Fire life safety responsibilities will include wet sprinkler systems and pre‑action sprinkler systems as well as their associated detection devices. Communications infrastructure responsibilities will include IFD/MDF/MMR management, structured cabling and supporting infrastructure ownership, and customer space management. Duties Data center subject matter expert for electrical, mechanical, controls, and fire life safety systems. Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems including electrical, mechanical, communications, building monitoring, and control. Track and trend operational characteristics. Mentor junior staff. Collaborate with the Site Data Center Manager to develop and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedule. Provide guidance to the Manager to determine maintenance requirements for mechanical and electrical systems. Ensure the data center operates at maximum efficiency, analyze existing conditions, recommend new technologies, and improve overall efficiency and cost reduction. Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer‑impacting outages. Manage the data floor and back‑of‑house mechanical loading capacity to ensure the cooling system operates at highest efficiency. Provide applied mechanical and integrated control expertise for the entire data center. Serve as a primary knowledge expert for fire and electrical codes. Perform technical writing for the derivation of procedures for preventive or corrective maintenance activities. Assist the Data Center Manager with the database management of maintenance discrepancies and resolve site issues with Operations management based on agreed priorities. Manage Trouble Ticket and Work Order processes. Lead infrastructure projects including cage build‑outs, overhead installations, rack and stack, CMMS navigation, problem‑solving procedures, and inventory management. Track and label all equipment per established procedures, maintain Service Level Agreements (SLA) compliance, and upload data to the OSS. Provide physical security within the CoreSite premises. Deliver exceptional day‑to‑day customer service and support. Escalate incidents and write reports. Monitor the building fire alarm system. Conduct facility and security tours and document/respond to issues found. Adhere to and promote CoreSite’s Principles of Operational Excellence and the 8 Guiding Principles. Requirements Knowledge Expert understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in a facility and data center environment, including electrical distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, STS, ATS, PDUs, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH, pre‑action sprinkler systems. Expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and other building codes and fire life safety compliance. Expert knowledge of fiber optics, cabling infrastructure, and industry best practices. Expert knowledge of industrial safety best practices (lockout/tag‑out, arc‑flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations). Expert knowledge with data trending, tracking, and analysis, and ability to learn PC‑based integrated critical monitoring systems. Skills 5‑7 years installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems (chilled water, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, water treatment, VFDs, pumps, HVAC, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, BMS, PLC, emergency standby diesel generators, fuel/oil systems, electric distribution, UPS, pre‑action sprinkler systems). Proven leadership skills. Expert fiber and copper cabling installation, pulling, dressing, and termination. Experience diagnosing and repairing IT hardware, servers, network switches, and structured cabling. Excellent communication skills, written and oral, and proficiency with Microsoft Office. Abilities Communicate effectively with customers and internal staff. Coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors performing maintenance or upgrades. Learn quickly and address issues during normal and after‑hour shifts. Operate in a rigorous process‑driven team environment. Analyze and solve problems logically. Multi‑task multiple projects. Operate hand and machine tools. Operate electrical tools such as a multimeter or infrared camera. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience. Five or more years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (preferably data center, hospital, or power plant). Ability to pass an extensive background check (criminal history, references, employment and education verification, DMV and credit check). Physical Demands and Special Requirements Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, smell, talk, hear, use hands to type and handle, see at distance and color. Comfortable working in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities. Willing to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on‑call support. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times. Compensation Base salary between $43.00 /hr and $47.00 /hr. Eligible for an annual bonus and equity based on performance.
