CDOC Mental Health Counselor Social Worker/Counselor II (Buena Vista)

Responsibilities Provide professional mental health services to inmates, including formal and informal evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions. Ensure accurate documentation in the Information System of mental health needs levels and psychiatric and developmental disability needs level codes. Provide group, brief, and individual therapy, and crisis intervention, and participate in a 24‑hour Mental Health On‑Call Rotation. Coordinate emergency and non‑emergency transfers for inmates experiencing acute mental health needs. Offer clinical direction to non‑clinical staff in mental health care and treatment of inmates. Ensure continuity of care by making referrals and providing necessary information and documentation to receiving units, facilities, or agencies. Document clinical records accurately and in a timely manner, both handwritten and electronically. Monitor inmate treatment, listen to inmate concerns, and provide counseling and direction. Promote and ensure the safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment through observations and contraband control. Report safety and security violations and attend required training programs, including self‑defense courses. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies permit or license, including but not limited to Marriage and Family Therapist Candidate, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist Candidate, or Psychologist. Preferred Qualifications Graduation with a master’s or doctoral degree in a mental health field such as counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or psychology from an accredited program. License eligibility as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist. Experience providing mental health treatment in a correctional environment. Required Competencies Ability to provide professional mental health treatment to inmates. Efficiency and ability to participate in a 24‑hour Mental Health On‑Call Rotation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and collaboration across programs and with external agencies. Ability to work independently and provide comprehensive clinical documentation. Maintenance of required registration/permit/licensure. Ability to work with a diverse population of inmates. Proficiency in English and ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines. Self‑control, emotional stability, and resilience under stress. Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
