Job Description

The City of Deer Park is seeking candidates for a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks, open spaces, grounds, turf and related facilities.

Supervision is received from the Park Operations Crew Leader, Equipment Operator I, Equipment Operator II, Maintenance Tech I, or Mechanic II. Supervision exercised is none.

Essential duties and responsibilities include maintaining park and open space areas, performing trash and debris removal, sweeping, washing, painting, and repairing outdoor tables and slabs, performing minor maintenance of open space structures, routine maintenance on lawn with power equipment, planting lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers, maintaining and adjusting specialized turf care equipment and tools, keeping records of work completed, and performing custodial work such as changing light bulbs, sweeping floors, cleaning restrooms, graffiti removal, and cleaning rain gutters.

Peripheral duties include dragging ball fields, performing backup duties for related positions, assisting in the maintenance of swimming pools, and serving as a member of various employee committees.

Desired minimum qualifications include any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work, some knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance, some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs, some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions, skill in operation of listed tools and equipment, ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule, ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions, ability to communicate orally and in writing, ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely, ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions, and ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

Special requirements include a valid state driver's license or ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment.

Physical demands include reaching with hands and arms, standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, talking or hearing, lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving more than 100 pounds, and specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment includes working near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, working in high, precarious places, being exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, risk of electrical shock, and a usually loud noise level.

Part-Time & Temporary Employees are eligible to become members of the Deer Park Credit Union and are covered by Unemployment Insurance and Workers Compensation Insurance.
