PHLEBOTOMIST - Laboratory Support Assistant

We are looking for an experienced Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist.


Duties and Responsibilities :

Duties and Responsibilities essential to performing the job successfully include all the skills and competencies described in the competency checklist associated with each position. Each staff member is responsible for maintaining the skills necessary to perform the technical aspects of their job. Staff members provide care appropriate to the condition and age of patients, including geriatric, pediatric and general population. Staff is responsible for the care and safety of patients and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. Staff is responsible for communicating the mission and vision of the hospital as well as developing effective working relationships with patients, providers, and fellow caregivers.


The Laboratory Support Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of functions that ultimately create an exceptional patient experience by fulfilling their laboratory needs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Lab Safety: Demonstrates knowledge of safe and proper techniques required for specimen acquisition, processing, delivery and storage.
2. Hospital Policies: Adheres to all hospital, and regulatory policies and procedures governing clinical laboratory
3. Customer Service: Works with providers/patients to resolve basic issues such as assist with order codes/missed tests/add-on tests.
4. Team Work: Works with coworkers with the common goal of the exceptional patient experience.
5. Problem Solving: Addresses issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention (e.g. adverse reactions to phlebotomy) and informs the supervisor or other appropriate leadership of such situations.
6. Reagent and Supply Management: Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
7. Phlebotomy: Obtains blood specimen by performing venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks maintaining the order of draw and the knowledge of specimen requirements for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in all areas and for all patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, on a rotational basis in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
8. Specimen Processing: Processes specimens for testing (i.e. centrifuge, distribute and storage etc.) and transfer specimens to reference laboratory.
9. Pathology Assistant: Assist Pathologist- set up bench with specimens obtained from ER/Special Procedures, order tests for reference lab send out. Follow up on results. Attend occasional procedures.
10. Specimen Acceptability: Follow policies and procedures to procure the best specimen for testing.
11. Training: Assists in training new staff
12. Maintenance: QC point of care equipment, check room temperatures/humidity control/refrigerator temperatures daily.
13. Quality Assurance: Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
14. Registration: Obtain patient information/insurance to create visit for billing services.
15. Documentation/Clerical: Maintains laboratory records in accordance with established procedures and protocols and performs additional clerical work.
16. Other Duties: As instructed by leadership

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Basic theoretical and operational job knowledge in phlebotomy and specimen accessioning
• Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities for maximum department efficiency.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and customer database systems
• Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to handle telephone inquiries from clients.

Education/Licensure/Certifications/Qualifications:

• Education and Experience: High School diploma and preferably some clinical and/or medical experience as a phlebotomist and specimen accessioner.
• Required Licensed/Certification/Registration: Phlebotomy certification or similar credentials desired.
