Job Description A welder at McWane Plant & Industrial in Exeter, CA is responsible for assembling, repairing, and joining metal components using various welding techniques while ensuring safety and quality standards. Responsibilities Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to understand product specifications and measurements. Measure, cut, and shape metal components using hand tools, plasma cutters, or metal cutting machines. Perform welding operations using MIG, TIG, Stick, and arc welding to join metal parts. Set up, maintain, and operate welding equipment safely and efficiently. Obtain specified electrode and insert it into a portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun. Connect cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician. Strike and create arc to generate heat, melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece, and join edges of workpiece. Manually guide electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining arc length and speed to produce specified depth of fusion and bead as judged from color, sound, and size of molten puddle. Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Examine weld for bead size and other specifications. Apply filler rod manually to supply weld metal. Clean or degrease weld joint or workpiece. Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. Prepare broken parts for welding by grooving or scaring surfaces. Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter. Preheat workpiece with hand torch or heating furnace. Position and clamp workpieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture. Tack assemblies together. Perform other related duties as needed to meet project or organizational requirements. Additional Information Interpersonal: Listens without interrupting; keeps emotions under control. Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational or technical training in welding highly preferred. Continuous education and certification renewal often required to keep up with evolving welding technologies and methods. Certifications Professional credentials from recognized organizations such as the American Welding Society (AWS), including Certified Welder (CW) status. Skills & Abilities Hands‑on welding experience through previous jobs or apprenticeships; familiarity with different metals and welding techniques. Working knowledge of MIG welding equipment. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations. Basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages. Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, uncomplicated instructions and to deal with problems involving a few variables. Physical Demands Stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel regularly. Walk, stand, reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently. Occasionally climb or balance, talk or hear. Frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds. Close, peripheral, and depth vision required; ability to adjust focus. Work Environment Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. Occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. Moderate to loud noise level. Safety gear such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing mandatory to prevent injuries. Benefits & Compensation Hourly pay rate: $20‑$21.
