OWEN COUNTY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION: GUIDANCE COUNSELOR – ELEMENTARY/PRIMARY LEVEL JOB CLASS CODE: 1050 QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate 2. Certification as School Guidance Counselor 3. Three (3) years successful teaching experience 4. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and community REPORTS TO: Principal JOB GOAL: To make guidance and counseling services available to all students, providing for each student’s individual needs depending on his/her abilities and interests. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Help students to develop positive attitudes toward self, family and community. 2. Help students to increase motivation and confidence for success in school and instill understanding and appreciate of self and others. 3. Teach decision-making and communication skills. 4. Create an emotionally healthy school learning climate. 5. Will work to improve cooperation between school and home. 6. Will work with students to develop career awareness for the future. 7. Work to build tolerance and appreciation of all persons. 8. Will intervene in conflict, crisis and emergency situations. 9. Coordinates human services at the school site to ensure that the basic security needs of the children are met. 10. Will provide information and referrals about community agencies and services. 11. Acts as liaison for community agencies to disseminate information to the school community and to bring additional programs to the school. 12. Provides information and resources for classroom guidance activities for both individual and group sessions. 13. Confers with teachers and other staff to plan jointly for student needs. 14. Works to provide in-service and staff development programs on counseling issues such as crisis management, fetal alcohol syndrome, hyperactivity and behavior modification. 15. Offers teachers interventions and strategies that enhance a child’s ability to succeed in the learning environment. 16. Assists with the maintenance of the permanent record system and helps provide information for the placement and scheduling of students in classes appropriate to their needs. Tests homeschooled students when enrolling in school. 17. Interprets permanent record data to parents or legal guardians upon request. 18. Participates in processes concerning the placement and referral of students with special education needs (i.e., Chairperson for ARC, RTI, 504, etc.) 19. Assist with scheduling, class lists and awards programs throughout the school year. 20. Consult with new students and parents. 21. Serves as school assessment coordinator for benchmarking and state assessments while promoting college and career readiness. Will also assist with other testing such as MAP. 22. Will function as the individual in charge in the principal’s absence, within the framework established by the principal. 23. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District and other self selected professional growth activities.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (cont.): 24. Complete both District required in-service training and state mandated Effective Instructional Leadership Training. 25. Notifies direct supervisors/staff of working schedule if counselor serves two schools. 26. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding employees, individual students and their families. 27. Maintain acceptable personal attendance without repeated unexcused absences, tardiness, absences without notification, or abuse of sick leave. 28. Other duties as may be assigned by immediate supervisor(s). TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and number of days per year set annually by the Board of Education EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Personnel. #J-18808-Ljbffr
