Science Teacher-High School

Science Teacher Under the general supervision of the School Principal, develop students' skills and competence in science—general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics—by using scientific methods and problem‑solving and promoting an understanding of science applied to practical solutions. Essential Functions Teach knowledge and skills in one or more fields of science, following district curriculum. Promote critical and creative thinking and analysis in all related subject areas. Create a safe classroom environment conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into learning experiences with sequential assignments that challenge students and maximize instructional time. Design learning activities that demonstrate science applied to everyday life, including research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and laboratory activities. Instruct students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment and materials. Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modify instruction to fit individual needs, including students with special needs, and provide individual and small‑group instruction as needed. Maintain familiarity with district and Connecticut State standardized tests to adapt curriculum and maximize student achievement. Continuously acquire professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, and by conducting research. Organize and maintain accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws. Encourage parental involvement and communicate effectively with students and parents. Ensure student conduct aligns with school and district standards, establishing behavior standards for a functional learning environment. Coordinate with other professional staff, especially within grade level, and participate in faculty meetings and committees. Select, requisition, and maintain appropriate instructional supplies and equipment, sustaining inventory records and ensuring equipment functionality. Additional Duties Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators designated by the Superintendent. Equipment Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone. Travel Requirements Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles. Knowledge of a wide range of science subjects, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, and related areas (e.g., mathematics). Knowledge of data systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws about education and students. Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to engage in self‑evaluation of performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards Work in standard office and school building environments. Certification/License State certification as a Science Teacher or as required for the position. Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation. Education Bachelor of Science from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching. Master’s degree preferred. Experience Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
