POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Veterinary & Community Programs Director, the Senior Clinic Manager is responsible for overseeing a clinic team that serves over 12,000 animals annually through shelter and community services. They are a key organizational leader, responsible for thought leadership and collaboration with the Veterinary team leadership and ensuring entire Vet Services team execute protocols, procedures, patient care, and support for pet owners appropriately. The Senior Clinic Manager should be equally skilled in technical abilities and managing a large and dynamic team. The Senior Clinic Manager is excited about animal welfare, High-Quality High-Volume Spay Neuter (HQHVSN) practices, and increasing access to veterinary care in our community.
KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Leadership:
- Drives innovation and sustainable growth through identifying best practices and collaborating with the broader Seattle Humane team to implement mission driven change.
- Follows patient care and shelter protocols and ensures compliance from staff.
- Communicates in a professional and effective manner with the public, Seattle Humane staff, and volunteers.
- Maintains collaborative relationships with local veterinary technician and assistant training programs to promote hiring and arrange and oversee externship opportunities with SH.
- Exemplifies teamwork within the Veterinary Services team and across Seattle Humane departments.
- Responsible for success of clinic staff, consisting of Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Clinic Associates, and Clinic Coordinators
- Checks in with staff regularly and promptly elevates concerns to the Director as needed.
- Conducts disciplinary meetings and maintains related documentation.
- Seeks opportunities to support staff in specialization opportunities and skill development.
- Oversees volunteers, which includes:
- Monitors volunteers to ensure they are following organization and department policies and procedures and to maintain high standards of customer service and animal care.
- Provides feedback, documentation, and discipline of volunteers in coordination with Volunteer Services.
- Maintains a high level of communication with the Volunteer Services team regarding volunteer positions and departmental recruiting needs
Clinic Oversight:
- Manages the daily flow of the clinic to ensure established priorities are met.
- Able to perform all roles of support staff as needed.
- Ensure the clinic and all equipment is well maintained.
- Capable of performing upon time of hire or ability to learn all skills of staff and fill in for all roles as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, caring for critical patients, independently providing medical care as assigned by a DVM, working with patients with infectious disease, leading a surgery team that sees 20-50 patients per day, and responding to emergencies.
- Responsible for all purchase orders (POs) for department spending, inventory, and ordering of department supplies to ensure adequate stock. Performs year-end full-stock inventories, carries out regularly scheduled stock checks and controls.
- Maintains accurate files and records, especially pertaining to medical, surgical and euthanasia records. Adheres to the files and records retention policy and procedures of organization.
- Maintains compliance with any safety, health and labor regulations.
Access to Care:
- Supports the overall function of Seattle Humane’s Community Clinic
- Provide compassionate and professional support to clients seeking services, maintaining a judgement-free and trauma-informed approach
- Support Seattle Humane’s efforts in increasing access to care in underserved areas through outreach clinics and collaborating with external agencies
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
- Works closely with all departments and communicates effectively regarding the medical needs of shelter animals.
- Works closely with other Operations departments to provide training as relates to veterinary care.
- Promotes a positive, supportive, and cooperative work environment based on mutual respect and open communication

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Directly supervises Clinic Supervisors. Oversees clinic team consisting of Clinic Coordinators, Veterinary Assistants, Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Clinic Associates, and volunteers.
COMMUNICATION/INTERPERSONAL CONTACT:
- Regular verbal communication with department and other operational staff, written communication via written standard operating procedures, memos, emails, charts and signs.
- Regular verbal communication with adopters and spay/neuter & wellness clients through direct contact, over the telephone, or written communication.

COMPLEXITY:
A high degree of independent judgment is required. The nature of the job will vary. Diverse duties on a weekly basis as routine varies day to day. A strong attention to detail and the ability to respond to unexpected questions and comments is required. Must be able to maintain concentration on a task or series of tasks while dealing with frequent interruptions. Must be able to work well remotely, and without direct supervision. Must be able to communicate effectively and display cultural competency with many people with varying backgrounds. The Manager should feel comfortable dealing with angry, confused, and/or distraught people. The ability to motivate, negotiate, and mediate is important when handling a variety of personalities and emotions. Requires great customer service skills. Must work well within a team setting.
With or without reasonable accommodation, the Manager frequently needs to speak clearly, hear well, write legibly, see clearly, and distinguish between various odors by sense of smell. To complete tasks, good dexterity, and sense of touch with both hands is needed. The Manager performs work standing and walking for four to six hours at a time. They frequently crouch, bend from the waist, and kneel. Managers may occasionally lift, floor to table and vice versa, and/or carry for at least 6-10 feet, up to 30 pounds with or without accommodation.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
- Must have at least 3 years of experience in veterinary field. Experience in HQHVSN, emergency medicine, and/or animal welfare field is a bonus.
- Must have 2 years of management or supervisory experience.
- Familiar with characteristics of animal behavior and utilization of low stress animal handling as related to a clinic/shelter environment.
- Must possess the organizational and planning skills to determine work priorities and schedules.
- Must be able to analyze problems, create or negotiate appropriate solutions, and understand statistical information.
- Proficient at use of computer technology including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet and database management software to efficiently accomplish work.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Washington or ability to transfer license from another state, preferred.
- Certified for euthanasia under Washington State regulations or willing to become trained.
- Capable of being certified in CPR and human first aid.
- Ability to obtain a Veterinary Medication Clerk License (can be obtained on the job).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily indoor working conditions in an office/clinic setting for nine to twelve hours per day. Some work may be done in kennels or outdoors. Exposures to potential hazards include waste anesthetic gases, radiation, cleaning chemicals and disinfectants, formalin, needles, scalpel blades and other sharp hazards, animal bites and scratches, zoonotic diseases, animal hair, dander and wastes, pharmaceutical and biological agents, euthanasia solution, eye hazards, steam (from autoclave), wet floors, potential electrical hazards, constant noise (vacuum, fan, barking) and interruptions, back strain, exposure to cold or other hazards with walk-in freezer.
WORK HOURS:
Full-time, exempt, salary position. Scheduled for 40 hours per week, generally scheduled over four ten-hour shifts. Working at least one regular weekend day should be expected. The clinic functions 7 days per week including holidays; schedule may vary depending on coverage needs, holidays or emergencies.

The position works on-site at the Bellevue, WA campus.
