Registered Nurse CVOR

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) provides specialized perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular, vascular, thoracic, and endoscopic surgical procedures. This role requires expertise in trauma or medical/surgical nursing with a focus on scrub cardiovascular, vascular, thoracic, and endoscopic surgeries. The RN collaborates with surgical teams to ensure patient safety, effective specimen handling, and adherence to universal protocols in a Level I trauma, teaching, and Magnet hospital setting. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled perioperative nursing care in CVOR, General OR, and related specialty areas.
• Scrub and assist during cardiovascular surgeries such as aortic aneurysm repair, coronary artery bypass graft, ECMO, and valve replacements.
• Support vascular surgeries including abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, and vein stripping.
• Assist in thoracic surgeries including lobectomy, thoracotomy, VATS, and mediastinoscopy.
• Participate in endoscopic procedures such as bronchoscopy, EGD, and PEG tube placement/exchange.
• Ensure compliance with laser safety protocols, specimen handling and labeling, and universal time-out procedures.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a teaching hospital environment to provide optimal patient care.
• Perform charting and documentation using Cerner electronic medical records.
• Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergent surgical needs as required.

• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or in application process.
• Minimum of 3 years of solid nursing experience with trauma or medical/surgical background preferred; first-timers accepted with relevant experience.
• BLS certification required; ACLS preferred.
• Experience in scrub cardiovascular, vascular, thoracic, and endoscopic surgical procedures.
• Knowledge of laser safety, specimen handling, universal protocol (time-out) procedures.
• Experience in a teaching hospital and Level II trauma environment.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute care hospital setting.

• ACLS certification.
• Experience with Whipple procedures.
• Experience in Level I trauma center settings.
• Familiarity with Cerner electronic medical records system.

• On-call requirement: 1-2 nights per week and every 5th weekend.
• Must be able to float within scope to meet facility needs.
• Work setting includes acute care, Magnet hospital, Level I trauma center.
• Parking permit required; no cost for parking.
• Must comply with hospital RTO restrictions (ideally no more than 5 days).
• Guaranteed hours may be adjusted with client call-offs; on-call shifts count as called-off shifts.

• Five 8-hour day shifts per week, typically 0615 to 1445.
• Block schedule accommodations may be discussed with manager.
• Shift assignments and schedule requests are managed in coordination with leadership.
