Head Lifeguard

Head Lifeguard Concord Recreation is seeking responsible Head Lifeguards for weekday and weekend shifts at our indoor and outdoor pool locations, as well as White Pond (seasonal). Head Lifeguards manage lifeguard operations, supervise lifeguards on duty, watch pool/waterfront activities, prevent and address dangerous situations, and respond to people in need of aid. Pay range: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour; starting pay based on qualifications. This is an hourly, part‑time position, consisting of up to 20 hours per week. Responsibilities Oversee the activities of lifeguards, instructors, coaches, and other program providers at pool and/or pond sites to ensure safety protocols are being followed; address observed issues promptly; advise management of problems, violations, and areas for improvement related to policies and procedures. Maintain watchfulness over pools and ponds to prevent dangerous situations. Monitor and assist swimmers, enforce regulations, provide basic first aid, perform rescue as appropriate, call for help, provide emergency care, interview witnesses, and file reports. Assist in the daily opening of the pool/waterfront, test pools for proper chlorine and pH levels, and set up lanes. Assist in the daily closing of the pool/waterfront; check facilities for vacancy at the end of the day; pick up any possessions left behind. Perform weekly tests of all emergency call boxes with the Concord Police Department to ensure proper connection and audibility. Perform special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested. Perform other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates. Ensure regular attendance at the workplace. For White Pond (seasonal): address all environmental, guest, and staff concerns effectively and efficiently; maintain beach policies and procedures; make weather‑related decisions in coordination with the Waterfront Director; oversee beachfront office operations, including all financial transactions and daily reconciliation; conduct daily facility checks for safety, cleanliness, and good repair; guarantee adequate coverage of the swim area by lifeguards during all hours of operation. For Emerson Pool (seasonal): oversee campers grades K‑7, with and without disabilities, while they participate in pool lessons and free swim; oversee the management of documentation required for camper swim tests and make appropriate referrals to families for Beede Swim lesson opportunities; work with the Camp Director to schedule all camp groups time at the pool weekly; consistently communicate with counselors, directors, specialists, nurse and parents regarding campers’ daily experiences; enforce rules, regulations, and policies to ensure safety of all children in attendance; build relationships with campers to foster friendly, supportive and nurturing group dynamics; schedule lifeguards to ensure adequate coverage for all times of operation, with particular attention to programs and events. Directly supervise the activities and performance of lifeguards and provide functional oversight to other aquatics staff. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Concord’s policies and applicable laws; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; address complaints and resolve problems. Qualifications High school education and one to three years of lifeguarding and/or pool supervision experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED. WSI certification preferred. Obtain CPO certification within one year of hire. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license, with a safe driving record and ability to provide personal vehicle for occasional transportation during work hours. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Working knowledge of multi‑pool aquatic facility procedures and equipment. Thorough knowledge of lifesaving techniques, CPR, and first aid; ability to swim. Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public, including children and young adults, in a courteous and tactful manner and to fairly and tactfully enforce facility rules and regulations. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Moderate physical effort is generally required, including frequent lifting of between 30 and 60 pounds. Additional physical effort is required in emergency situations to perform rescue/lifesaving activities. The job requires walking, swimming, standing, crouching, reaching, crawling, climbing, talking, sitting, watching, and hearing for extended periods of time. Use of hands to finger, handle, and feel objects or equipment is regular. Vision and hearing must be at or correctable to normal ranges. Work is performed in varied environments including those of a large multi‑pool aquatic facility, an outdoor camp pool, and a pond waterfront; includes exposure to various weather conditions and pool chemicals.
