Fire Plans Examiner The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Office of the Fire Marshal is recruiting for Fire Plans Examiners who assess, develop, and execute specialized activities in planning and engineering. Responsibilities require knowledge of various fire codes and ordinances pertaining to building design, construction, and site development. Fire Plans Examiners coordinate complex new construction and tenant improvement plan reviews, read and interpret building plans and blueprints, and verify construction and fire protection system plans to ensure compliance. Qualifications Certificates California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Fire Inspector I certification (or Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D course certificates) or equivalent. Fire Prevention Officer or Fire Prevention Officer 1A, 1B, 1C course certificates. Fire Plans Examiner certificates (CSFM, Pro Board, NFPA, DOD, or ICC). Experience – Two (2) years of paid work experience with primary responsibility of performing fire prevention field inspections, fire and life safety systems, building construction, hazardous materials, and other community risk reduction programs; must include experience working with plans and interpreting fire and building code requirements. Education – Fifteen (15) semester units (23 quarter units) in Fire Science, Fire Safety, Building Inspection Technology, Engineering, Architecture or related fields from an accredited college or university. An associate degree in Fire Science may substitute for up to one year of the required experience. An additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for the required education. Conditions of Employment Pre‑Employment Process – successful background check. Work Hours – may require overtime, weekends, holidays. Physical – regular bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, exposure to dust, vapor, hazardous materials, extreme climates. Travel – may travel within and outside the County; valid California Class C driver’s license required. Certifications – must obtain CSFM Fire Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, and 1C certificates within 12 months of hire. Sponsorship – only U.S. citizens or legal residents; no visa sponsorship accepted.
